Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Systems and methods for delivering multiple ocular implants to reduce intraocular pressure are disclosed. The ocular implants can be implanted at multiple sites within a single human eye without requiring removal of the delivery apparatus from the eye. A system for delivering multiple ocular implants can include at least two implants preloaded within a delivery device and configured to be implanted within the eye, a metering device configured to transfer energy to the implants for delivery at selected locations within the eye, wherein the metering device is configured to meter a variable amount of energy for each implant delivery event in the eye. The system can further include an injector mechanism configured to serially engage and drive each of the implants.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

What is claimed is: 1. A method of treating an ocular disorder, comprising: providing an implant delivery apparatus comprising a plurality of implants; advancing said implant delivery apparatus into an anterior chamber of an eye to locate a distal end of said implant delivery apparatus near a target site; using a driving member to (i) isolate a first implant and drive the isolated implant distally relative to the other implants and (ii) implant said first implant in eye tissue at said target site; and implanting a second implant in eye tissue at another target site without removing the implant delivery apparatus from the eye. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises forming an incision in the eye through which said implant delivery apparatus is advanced into the anterior chamber. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said target sites comprise a physiologic outflow pathway. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises moving an incising member of said implant delivery apparatus to a retracted position to expose at least a portion of a delivery device of said implant delivery apparatus, and wherein implantation of said first and second implants occurs with said incising member in the retracted position and without removing said incising member from the eye. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing an implant delivery apparatus comprises providing an instrument comprising a driving member with a plurality of implants serially disposed proximally of a distal end of the driving member. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises positioning a distal end of said driving member adjacent eye tissue. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein isolating the first implant comprises positioning the isolated implant distally relative to a distal end of said driving member. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the distal end of said driving member comprises a plurality of flexible fingers. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein driving the isolated implant comprises transmitting stored energy operatively coupled to said driving member to the isolated implant to advance it within eye tissue. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein transmitting stored energy comprises transmitting stored energy from a spring. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein isolating the first implant comprises retracting said driving member. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein prior to implanting a second implant, the method further comprises retracting said driving member to isolate said second implant.
