Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A trocar assembly can include a cannula, a seal cartridge, and an obturator. The seal cartridge is configured to be releasably coupled to the cannula and to be disposed at least partially within the cannula in a coupled configuration of the seal cartridge. The obturator is configured to directly latch to the cannula and to extends through the cannula and the seal cartridge in a coupled configuration of the obturator.

What is claimed is: 1. A trocar assembly comprising: a cannula comprising a first window through a sidewall of the cannula; a seal cartridge configured to releasably couple to the cannula and to be disposed at least partially within the cannula in a coupled configuration of the seal cartridge, the seal cartridge comprising a release button accessible through the first window in the coupled configuration of the seal cartridge; and an obturator configured to directly latch to the cannula through the first window and to extend through the cannula and the seal cartridge in a coupled configuration of the obturator. 2. The trocar assembly of claim 1 , wherein the obturator is configured to latch directly to a brim of the cannula in the coupled configuration of the obturator. 3. The trocar assembly of claim 1 , wherein the obturator is configured to latch directly to an inner surface of the cannula in the coupled configuration of the obturator. 4. The trocar assembly of claim 1 , wherein the seal cartridge is configured to directly latch to the cannula and to form a seal with the cannula in the coupled configuration of the seal cartridge. 5. The trocar assembly of claim 1 , wherein the obturator blocks removal of the seal cartridge from the cannula in the coupled configuration of the obturator. 6. The trocar assembly of claim 1 , wherein the obturator comprises a release button that rotationally aligns with the release button of the seal cartridge in the coupled configuration of the obturator. 7. The trocar assembly of claim 1 , wherein the obturator comprises a release button that is rotationally offset with the release button of the seal cartridge in the coupled configuration of the obturator. 8. The trocar assembly of claim 1 , wherein the cannula comprises a second window disposed approximately 180 degrees apart from the first window. 9. The trocar assembly of claim 8 , wherein the cannula comprises a slot that permits access through the sidewall of the cannula to a fluid port of the seal cartridge in the coupled configuration of the seal cartridge. 10. The trocar assembly of claim 9 , wherein the first window and the second window are each disposed approximately 90 degrees from the slot. 11. The trocar assembly of claim 1 , wherein: the cannula comprises a funnel portion and a tubular portion extending distally from the funnel portion; the obturator comprises a head portion, a shaft portion extending distally from the head portion, and a tip at a distal end of the shaft portion; the head portion of the obturator engages the funnel portion of the cannula in the coupled configuration of the obturator; the shaft portion of the obturator extends through the tubular portion of the cannula in the coupled configuration of the obturator, and the tip at the distal end of the shaft portion extends distally beyond a distal end of the cannula in the coupled configuration of the obturator. 12. A trocar assembly comprising: a cannula comprising: a funnel portion comprising a latching window through a sidewall of the funnel portion; and a lower cannula portion extending from the funnel portion, wherein the lower cannula portion defines a cannula lumen; a seal cartridge configured to releasably engage the funnel portion of the cannula, the seal cartridge comprising a release button accessible through the latching window in a sealing configuration of the seal cartridge; and an obturator comprising: an upper obturator portion configured to couple to the funnel portion of the cannula in a coupled configuration of the obturator; a shaft portion extending from the upper obturator portion, wherein the shaft portion is configured to extend through the cannula lumen and the seal cartridge in the coupled configuration of the obturator; and a latching member movable to engage the funnel portion through the latching window to retain the cannula and the obturator in the coupled configuration of the obturator. 13. The trocar assembly of claim 12 , wherein the funnel portion comprises a brim disposed at an upper edge of the sidewall, wherein the latching member of the obturator is movable to engage against the brim of the cannula in the coupled configuration of the obturator. 14. The trocar assembly of claim 12 , wherein the latching member of the obturator is movable to engage an edge of the latching window in the coupled configuration of the obturator. 15. The trocar assembly of claim 12 , further comprising a gas port configured for fluid communication with the cannula lumen. 16. The trocar assembly of claim 12 , wherein the latching member comprises a biasing member configured to urge the latching member through the latching window of the funnel portion of the cannula. 17. The trocar assembly of claim 12 , wherein the seal cartridge comprises an outer sealing portion configured to seal against the funnel portion of the cannula and an inner sealing portion configured to seal against the shaft portion of the obturator. 18. The trocar assembly of claim 12 , wherein the seal cartridge release button is part of a seal cartridge latching member configured to retain the seal cartridge and the cannula in the sealing configuration separately from the obturator. 19. The trocar assembly of claim 18 , wherein the seal cartridge latching member comprises a biasing member configured to urge the release button through the latching window. 20. The trocar assembly of claim 18 , wherein the seal cartridge latching member and the latching member of the obturator are rotationally aligned.
