Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An apparatus includes a shaft assembly and an end effector. The shaft assembly includes an outer sheath and a staple driving mechanism. The end effector includes a staple deck, an anvil, a first staple driver, and a second staple driver. The staple deck defines a plurality of staple openings in at least one annular array. Each staple opening in the plurality of staple openings houses a staple. The anvil is configured to actuate relative to the staple deck to compress tissue between the staple deck and the anvil. The staple driving mechanism is configured to actuate the first staple driver to fire a first staple of the plurality of staples against the anvil. The staple driving mechanism is further configured to actuate the second staple driver independently of the first staple driver to fire a second staple of the plurality of staples against the anvil.

We claim: 1. An apparatus, comprising: (a) an electrically powered handle; (b) a shaft configured to selectively couple with the electrically powered handle, wherein the shaft comprises: (i) an outer sheath, and (ii) a driving body slidably housed within the outer sheath, wherein the electrically powered handle is configured to drive actuation of the driving body; and (c) an end effector located distally relative to the shaft, wherein the end effector comprises: a staple deck defining a plurality of staple openings, wherein each staple opening in the plurality of staple openings houses a staple, (ii) an anvil configured to actuate relative to the staple deck to compress tissue between the staple deck and the anvil, (iii) a staple driver configured to actuate relative to the staple deck to thereby drive a first array of staples against the anvil, wherein the driving body is configured to drive actuation of the staple driver relative to the staple deck, (iv) a second staple driver configured to actuate relative to each of the staple deck and the staple driver to drive a second array of staples against the anvil; and (v) a knife configured to actuate independently and relative to each of the staple driver, the second staple driver, and the staple deck to thereby sever tissue captured between the anvil and the staple deck. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the driving body is configured drive actuation of the knife relative to the staple driver and the staple deck. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first array of staples comprises an annular array of staples. 4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the electrically powered handle comprises a closure trigger. 5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the electrically powered handle comprises a graphical user interface. 6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the end effector further comprises a trocar slidably coupled to the shaft, wherein the anvil is configured to selectively couple to the trocar. 7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the anvil comprises a shank configured to selectively receive the trocar. 8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the staple driver comprises an annular array of staple driving members. 9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the driving body is configured to actuate the staple driver with a first firing stroke, wherein the driving body is configured to actuate the knife with a second firing stroke. 10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the shaft further comprises a distal housing, wherein the staple driver and the knife are slidably contained within the distal housing. 11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the distal housing further comprises an inner core, wherein the knife further comprises a cylindrical blade member defining an inner core pathway, wherein the inner core is received within the inner core pathway. 12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the driving body extends along a longitudinal axis, wherein the driving body is configured to rotate about the longitudinal axis relative to the outer sheath. 13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the driving body comprises a guide pin configured to interact with the outer sheath in order to rotate the driving body about the longitudinal axis. 14. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the staple deck comprises an annular shape. 15. An apparatus, comprising: (a) an electrically powered handle; (b) a shaft configured to selectively couple with the electrically powered handle, wherein the shaft comprises: (i) an outer sheath, and (ii) a reciprocating driver slidably housed within the outer sheath, wherein the electrically powered handle is configured to drive actuation of the reciprocating driver relative to the outer sheath; and (c) an end effector located distally relative to the shaft, wherein the end effector comprises: (i) a staple housing, wherein an array of staples is contained within the staple housing, (ii) an anvil configured to actuate relative to the staple housing to compress tissue between the staple housing and the anvil, (iii) a staple driver configured to drive the array of staples against the anvil in response to the reciprocating driver traveling along a staple driver stroke, and (iv) a knife configured to actuate relative to the staple driver to thereby sever tissue captured between the anvil and the staple housing, wherein the reciprocating driver is configured to travel along a severing stroke to drive actuation of the knife relative to the staple driver. 16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the reciprocating driver is configured to drive actuation of the staple driver in order to drive the array of staples against the anvil. 17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the reciprocating driver is configured to actuate through a first stroke to drive actuation of the staple driver, wherein the reciprocating driver is configured to actuate through a second stroke to drive actuation of the knife. 18. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the knife is cylindraceous. 19. An apparatus, comprising: (a) an electrically powered handle; (b) a shaft configured to selectively couple with the electrically powered handle, wherein the shaft comprises: (i) a chassis configured to selectively couple with the electrically powered handle, (ii) an outer sheath extending distally from the chassis, and (iii) a driving body slidably housed within the outer sheath, wherein the electrically powered handle is configured to drive actuation of the driving body, wherein the driving body is configured to actuate along a staple firing stroke and a knife firing stroke; and (c) an end effector located distally relative to the shaft, wherein the end effector comprises: (i) a staple housing containing a plurality of staples, (ii) an anvil configured to actuate relative to the staple housing to compress tissue in cooperation with the staple housing, (iii) a staple driver configured to drive the plurality of staples against the anvil in response to the driving body actuating along the staple firing stroke, and (iv) a knife configured to sever tissue captured between the staple housing and the anvil in response to the driving body actuating along the knife firing stroke.
