Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A staple cartridge assembly for use with a surgical stapling instrument includes a staple cartridge including a plurality of staples and a cartridge deck. The staple cartridge assembly also includes a compressible adjunct positionable against the cartridge deck, wherein the staples are deployable into tissue captured against the compressible adjunct, and wherein the compressible adjunct comprises a first biocompatible layer comprising a first portion, a second biocompatible layer comprising a second portion, and crossed spacer fibers extending between the first portion and the second portion.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. An adjunct, comprising: a first layer to interface with a staple cartridge; a second layer to interface with tissue, wherein the first layer and the second layer are configurable between: an uncompressed state in which a first space is defined between the first layer and the second layer; and a compressed state in which a second space less than the first space is defined between the first layer and the second layer; and a support layer intermediate the first layer and the second layer, wherein the support layer comprises walls that define cavities within the support layer, and wherein the cavities are interconnected; wherein the adjunct comprises a polymeric composition that comprises a pharmaceutical agent, wherein the pharmaceutical agent is to be released from the polymeric composition to effect tissue healing at a faster rate than without the pharmaceutical agent. 2. The adjunct of claim 1 , wherein the cavities extend longitudinally along the length of the support layer. 3. The adjunct of claim 1 , further comprising an attachment to couple to the first layer, the second layer, the support layer, and the staple cartridge. 4. The adjunct of claim 3 , wherein the adjunct comprises a first composition, and wherein the attachment comprises a second composition different than the first composition. 5. The adjunct of claim 3 , wherein the attachment comprises a tether to couple the adjunct to the staple cartridge. 6. The adjunct of claim 1 , wherein the walls define honeycomb shaped cavities. 7. The adjunct of claim 1 , wherein the first layer defines a first variable thickness, and wherein the second layer defines a second variable thickness. 8. The adjunct of claim 1 , wherein the pharmaceutical agent comprises a metalloproteinases (MMPs) inhibitor. 9. An adjunct, comprising: a first layer to interface with a staple cartridge; a second layer to interface with tissue; and a support layer intermediate the first layer and the second layer, wherein the support layer defines cavities, and wherein the adjunct is configurable between: an uncompressed state in which the cavities are a first height; and a compressed state in which the cavities are a second height less than the first height; wherein the adjunct comprises a polymeric composition that comprises a pharmaceutical agent, wherein the pharmaceutical agent is to be released from the polymeric composition to effect tissue healing at a faster rate than without the pharmaceutical agent. 10. The adjunct of claim 9 , wherein the cavities extend longitudinally along the length of the support layer. 11. The adjunct of claim 9 , further comprising an attachment to couple to the first layer, the second layer, the support layer, and the staple cartridge. 12. The adjunct of claim 11 , wherein the adjunct comprises a first composition, and wherein the attachment comprises a second composition different than the first composition. 13. The adjunct of claim 9 , wherein the cavities are honeycomb shaped cavities. 14. The adjunct of claim 9 , wherein the first layer defines a first variable thickness, and wherein the second layer defines a second variable thickness. 15. The adjunct of claim 9 , wherein the pharmaceutical agent comprises a metalloproteinases (MMPs) inhibitor. 16. A compressible adjunct, comprising: a first layer to interface with a staple cartridge; a second layer to interface with tissue; and a hollow support layer intermediate the first layer and the second layer, wherein the hollow support layer defines interconnected cavities; wherein the compressible adjunct comprises a polymeric composition that comprises a pharmaceutical agent, wherein the pharmaceutical agent is to be released from the polymeric composition to effect tissue healing at a faster rate than without the pharmaceutical agent. 17. The compressible adjunct of claim 16 , wherein the cavities extend longitudinally along the length of the support layer. 18. The compressible adjunct of claim 16 , wherein the cavities are honeycomb shaped cavities. 19. The compressible adjunct of claim 16 , wherein the first layer defines a first variable thickness, and wherein the second layer defines a second variable thickness. 20. The compressible adjunct of claim 16 , wherein the pharmaceutical agent comprises a metalloproteinases (MMPs) inhibitor.
