A method for retracting body tissue providing a retractor system that includes a rail having two opposed widened rail portions separated by a narrowed portion, each widened portion engageable by a separate clamp. The clamps are configured to support the rail to a fixed surface, or to support a surgical device. Each clamp may independently be positioned or slid along the rail to a desired location without interference with a clamp on an opposing widened rail portion. A device clamp is formed of spherical mating portions which enable alignment of a surgical device along six degrees of freedom, and tightenable by securing a single fastener. A retractor blade mount enables an angular and tilting disposition of a retractor blade, as well as remote manipulation of the retractor blade.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for retracting body tissue, comprising: providing a frame system; and retracting body tissue with the frame system to create an opening into a patient's body, wherein the frame system includes: a frame rail; a supporting frame arm configured to be coupled to the frame rail; a device clamp configured to slidably engage said frame rail; and a blade configured to be attached to the device clamp, wherein the frame rail includes separable sections that join to form a continuous frame rail of a desired length, wherein the continuous frame rail forms an unobstructed surface along which the supporting frame arm and the device clamp are configured to slide. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the separable sections each include one end forming a projection and an opposite end forming a recess, the projection of one section positionable within the recess of another section to thereby join said separable sections into the continuous frame rail of a desired length. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein each projection includes a circumferential groove, and each recess includes a rotatable bolt including a channel sized and dimensioned to receive at least a portion of the respective projection and mateably engage said circumferential groove within said channel. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the device clamp includes a tightening fastener, and wherein the device clamp is configured to engage the blade and enable positioning of the blade along six degrees of freedom, and after positioning the blade, to secure the blade and substantially prevent further movement of the blade upon tightening of only said tightening fastener. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the device clamp further includes a plurality of mating surfaces defining spherical portions. 6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the device clamp clamps to said frame rail upon tightening of only said tightening fastener. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing a retractor blade holder including: an extension having first and second opposed ends connectable to the device clamp; a mounting portion at said first end configured to support the blade; and a rotatable element disposed adjacent said second end configured to enable movement of the mounting portion and the blade. 8. A method for retracting body tissue, comprising: providing a frame system; retracting body tissue with the frame system to create an opening into a patient's body; and positioning an implant into the patient's body, wherein the frame system includes: a frame rail having opposing surfaces; a supporting frame arm configured to be affixable relative to the body tissue; a frame arm clamp configured to be coupled to said supporting frame arm; and at least one device clamp having opposed clamping surfaces each shaped to engage said opposing surfaces of said frame rail, said at least one device clamp further including a connector connecting said opposed clamping surfaces and configured to move said opposed clamping surfaces into contact with said opposing surfaces, said at least one device clamp slideable along said frame rail when said at least one device clamp is engaged with said frame rail, the frame arm clamp and said at least one device clamp movable past each other along said frame rail when said frame arm clamp is engaged with said frame rail and said at least one device clamp is engaged with said frame rail. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein said frame rail is provided in separable sections that form a continuous frame rail of a desired length and wherein said separable sections each include one end forming a projection and an opposite end forming a recess, the projection of one section positionable within the recess of another section to thereby join said separable sections into the continuous frame rail. 10. The method of claim 9 , said continuous frame rail forming an unobstructed surface along which said frame arm clamp or said at least one device clamp may slide continuously along a length of the continuous frame rail when engaged with said frame rail. 11. The method of claim 9 , wherein each projection includes a circumferential groove, and each recess includes a rotatable bolt including a channel sized and dimensioned to receive at least a portion of the respective projection and mateably engage said circumferential groove within said channel. 12. The method of claim 8 , wherein said at least one device clamp includes a tightening fastener, and wherein said at least one device clamp is configured to conformingly engage a surgical device and enable positioning of the surgical device along six degrees of freedom, and after positioning the surgical device, to secure the surgical device and substantially prevent further movement of the surgical device upon tightening of only said tightening fastener. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein said at least one device clamp further includes a plurality of mating surfaces defining spherical portions. 14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the surgical device is a retractor blade. 15. A method for retracting body tissue, comprising: providing a frame system; and retracting body tissue with the frame system to create an opening into a patient's body, wherein the frame system includes: a frame rail, said frame rail formed in separable portions, each separable portion including a projecting portion and a recessed portion, the projecting portion of one separable portion mateable with the recessed portion of another separable portion to connect the separable portions into a continuous frame rail of a desired length forming an unobstructed surface; a supporting frame arm configured to be affixable relative to the body tissue; a frame arm clamp coupled to said supporting frame arm, wherein the frame arm clamp has opposed clamping surfaces configured to engage said frame rail, said frame arm clamp further including a connector connecting said opposed clamping surfaces; a device clamp having opposed clamping surfaces configured to engage said frame rail; and a retractor blade configured to attach to the device clamp.
