Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system for operating and/or lubricating a plurality of valves. The system includes at least first and second control units, each of which is associated with a respective valve. Each control unit includes a hydraulic pressure inlet, a hydraulic pressure outlet, a hydraulic pressure line connected between the hydraulic pressure inlet and the hydraulic pressure outlet, and a hydraulic port which is connectable to the valve. The hydraulic pressure inlet of the first control unit is connectable to a hydraulic pressure source and the hydraulic pressure outlet of the first control unit is connectable to the hydraulic pressure inlet of the second control unit. In operation, the control unit is operable to selectively communicate hydraulic pressure from the hydraulic pressure line to the hydraulic port.

What is claimed is: 1. A system for operating and/or lubricating a plurality of valves, the system comprising: at least first and second control units, each of which is associated with a respective one of said plurality of valves, each control unit comprising: a hydraulic pressure inlet, a hydraulic pressure outlet and a hydraulic pressure line connected between the hydraulic pressure inlet and the hydraulic pressure outlet; the hydraulic pressure inlet of the first control unit being connectable to a hydraulic pressure source and the hydraulic pressure outlet of the first control unit being connectable to the hydraulic pressure inlet of the second control unit; and a hydraulic port which is connectable to the valve; wherein the control unit is operable to selectively communicate hydraulic pressure from the hydraulic pressure line to the hydraulic port. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of said first and second control units further comprises: a lubricant inlet, a lubricant outlet and a lubricant line connected between the lubricant inlet and the lubricant outlet; the lubricant inlet of the first control unit being connectable to a lubricant source and the lubricant outlet of the first control unit being connectable to the lubricant inlet of the second control unit; a lubricant port which is connectable to the valve; wherein the control unit is operable to selectively communicate lubricant from the lubricant line to the lubricant port. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein each control unit comprises a first valve connected between the lubricant line and the lubricant port, the first valve being operable to selectively communicate lubricant from the lubricant line to the lubricant port. 4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the first valve comprises an electrically, hydraulically or pneumatically operated valve. 5. The system of claim 3 or 4 , further comprising a lubricant pump. 6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the lubricant pump is connected between the lubricant line and the lubricant port. 7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the lubricant pump is operated at least in part by hydraulic pressure from the hydraulic pressure line. 8. The system of claim 2 , wherein each control unit comprises a lubricant pump connected between the lubricant line and lubricant port, the lubricant pump being operable to selectively communicate lubricant from the lubricant line to the lubricant port. 9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the lubricant pump is operated at least in part by hydraulic pressure from the hydraulic pressure line. 10. The system of claim 8 or 9 , wherein each control unit comprises a first valve connected between the lubricant line and the lubricant port. 11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first valve comprises an electrically, hydraulically or pneumatically operated valve. 12. The system of claim 2 , further comprising means for selectively connecting the lubricant line to the lubricant port. 13. The system of claim 1 or 2 , wherein each control unit is operable by a common control computer. 14. The system of claim 13 , wherein each control unit is provided with information identifying the location and/or function of the respective valve with which the control unit is associated, and wherein said information is provided in digital form to the control computer. 15. The system of claim 14 , wherein said information is contained in a machine-readable tag connectable to the control unit. 16. A system for operating and/or lubricating a plurality of valves, the system comprising: at least first and second control units, each of which is associated with a respective one of said plurality of valves, each control unit comprising: a lubricant inlet, a lubricant outlet and a lubricant line connected between the lubricant inlet and the lubricant outlet; the lubricant inlet of the first control unit being connectable to a lubricant source and the lubricant outlet of the first control unit being connectable to the lubricant inlet of the second control unit; a lubricant port which is connectable to the valve; at least one of a first valve and a lubricant pump connected between the lubricant line and the lubricant port; a controller for operating the valve and/or the lubricant pump to selectively communicate lubricant from the lubricant line to the lubricant port. 17. The system of claim 16 , wherein each of said first and second control units further comprises: a hydraulic pressure inlet, a hydraulic pressure outlet and a hydraulic pressure line connected between the hydraulic pressure inlet and the hydraulic pressure outlet; the hydraulic pressure inlet of the first control unit being connectable to a hydraulic pressure source and the hydraulic pressure outlet of the first control unit being connectable to the hydraulic pressure inlet of the second control unit; and a hydraulic port which is connectable to the valve; wherein the control unit is operable to selectively communicate hydraulic pressure from the hydraulic pressure line to the hydraulic port. 18. The system of claim 17 , wherein each control unit comprises a second valve connected between the hydraulic pressure line and the hydraulic pressure port, the second valve being operable to selectively communicate hydraulic pressure from the hydraulic pressure line to the hydraulic pressure port. 19. The system of claim 17 , wherein the lubricant pump is operated at least in part by hydraulic pressure from the hydraulic pressure line. 20. The system of any of claim 16 - 18 , wherein each control unit is operable by a common control computer. 21. The system of claim 20 , wherein each control unit is provided with information identifying the location and/or function of the respective valve with which the control unit is associated, and wherein said information is provided in digital form to the control computer. 22. The system of claim 21 , wherein said information is contained in a machine-readable tag connectable to the control unit.
