A mechanised container for use in a robotic storage and picking system is described. The container includes a base openable to deposit at least one item from the container in to a further container positioned by a load handling device beneath the first container. Each item can be stored in such mechanised containers in stacks within a robotic storage and picking system.

The invention claimed is: 1. A storage system, comprising: a first set of parallel rails or tracks and a second set of parallel rails or tracks extending substantially perpendicularly to the first set in a substantially horizontal plane to form a grid including a plurality of grid spaces; a set of uprights, the uprights supporting the rails or tracks, the uprights and rails or tracks together defining a framework; a plurality of containers located beneath the rails or tracks and within the framework, each of the plurality of containers being located within a footprint of a single grid space, wherein the plurality of containers include a plurality of storage containers, a delivery container (DT) substantially conforming to the shape and configuration of a storage container, and a dispensing container substantially conforming to the shape and configuration of a storage container; the dispensing container including at least one slidable panel movable from a first closed position to a second open position; and at least one load handling device, the load handling device having lifting means for lifting the dispensing container from beneath the grid and transporting it to a position above the delivery container (DT), wherein the at least one slidable panel, in the first closed position, abuts sides of the dispensing container to form a continuous base, and is configured so that when the at least one slidable panel is moved to the second open position one or more inventory items may be dispensed from the dispensing container into the delivery container (DT) located below the dispensing container within the storage system. 2. The storage system according to claim 1 , wherein the dispensing container comprises: a roller mechanism for rolling the at least one panel from the first closed position to the second open position. 3. The storage system according to claim 1 , comprising: a controller configured to activate movement of the at least one slidable panel to move from the first position to the second position. 4. The storage system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one load handling device is configured to transport the plurality of storage containers, the dispensing container and the delivery container (DT). 5. The storage system according to claim 1 , comprising: a dispenser located within the dispensing container wherein the at least one load handling device has means for activating the dispenser through an opening of the dispensing container and the at least one load handling device is configured to activate the dispenser when the dispensing container is positioned above a delivery container (DT). 6. The storage system according to claim 1 , comprising: sensors for detecting transfer of items from the dispensing container to the delivery container (DT), the sensors located in a bin gripper assembly. 7. The storage system according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of containers includes a plurality of the delivery containers (DT) and a plurality of the dispensing containers. 8. A method of remotely moving items between two containers in a storage system including a first set of parallel rails or tracks and a second set of parallel rails or tracks extending substantially perpendicularly to the first set in a substantially horizontal plane to form a grid including a plurality of grid spaces, a set of uprights, the uprights supporting the rails or tracks, the uprights and rails or tracks together defining a framework, a plurality of containers located beneath the rails or tracks and within the framework, each of the plurality of containers being located within a footprint of a single grid space, wherein the plurality of containers include a plurality of storage containers, a delivery container (DT) substantially conforming to the shape and configuration of a storage container, and a dispensing container substantially conforming to the shape and configuration of a storage container; the dispensing container including, at least one slidable panel movable from a first closed position to a second open position, at least one load handling device, the load handling device having lifting means for lifting the dispensing container from beneath the grid and transporting it to a position above the delivery container (DT), wherein the at least one slidable panel, in the first closed position, abuts sides of the dispensing container to form a continuous base, and is configured so that when the at least one slidable panel is moved to the second open position one or more inventory items may be dispensed from the dispensing container into the delivery container (DT) located below the dispensing container within the storage system, the plurality of containers located in stacks within the framework beneath the grid, the method comprising: storing at least one inventory item within the dispensing container; positioning the dispensing container above a target location, the target location including the delivery container (DT) within the storage system; and dispensing the at least one inventory item into the delivery container (DT). 9. The method according to claim 8 , comprising: returning the dispensing container by the load handling device to a goods inbound portion of the system or returning the dispensing container to a storage stack once the at least one inventory item has been deposited in the delivery container. 10. The method according to claim 9 , comprising: transporting the delivery container (DT) to a dispatch station for delivery once an order in the delivery container (DT) is complete. 11. The method according to claim 9 , comprising: keeping the delivery container (DT) in a robotic picking portion of the storage system awaiting deposit of further inventory items, or transporting the delivery container (DT) to a conventional pick station when an order has not been fulfilled. 12. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the storage system includes a dispenser located with the dispensing container, the method comprising: activating the dispenser to dispense the at least one inventory item into the delivery container (DT). 13. The method according to claim 8 , comprising: transporting the delivery container (DT) to a dispatch station for delivery once an order in the delivery container (DT) is complete. 14. The method according to claim 8 , comprising: keeping the delivery container (DT) in a robotic picking portion of the storage system awaiting deposit of further inventory items, or transporting the delivery container (DT) to a conventional pick station when an order has not been fulfilled.
