Intraoral scanning systems for displaying 3D models of a patient's dental arch and near-IR images from the dental arch. These systems may include a wand with one or more image sensors and processors for processing the 3D models and near-IR information. The 3D models may include surface (e.g., color) information and the near-IR images may include information on internal structures, including enamel and dentin.

What is claimed is: 1. An intraoral scanning system, the system comprising: a wand having at least one image sensor and a near-infrared (near-IR) light source; and one or more processors operably connected to the wand, the one or more processors configured to: display a three-dimensional (3D) model of a patient's dental arch; display a viewing window over a portion of the 3D model of the patient's dental arch; change a relative position between the viewing window and the 3D model of the patient's dental arch based on input from the user; identify, from a plurality of near-IR images of the patient's dental arch that were taken from different angles and positions relative to the patient's dental arch, an identified near-IR image taken at an angle and position that approximates a relative angle and position between the viewing window and the 3D model of the patient's dental arch; and display the identified near-IR image taken at the angle and position that approximates the relative angle and position between the viewing window and the 3D model of the patient's dental arch. 2. The intraoral scanning system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors is configured to control collection of the plurality of near-IR images. 3. The intraoral scanning system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors is configured to continuously identify and display the identified near-IR image taken at the angle and position that approximates the relative angle and position between the viewing window and the 3D model of the patient's dental arch as the user changes the relative position between the viewing window and the 3D model of the patient's dental arch. 4. The intraoral scanning system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors is configured to change the relative position between the viewing window and the 3D model of the patient's dental arch based on input from a user input device by changing one or more of: an angle between a plane of the viewing window and the patient's dental arch, and a portion of the patient's dental arch adjacent to the viewing window. 5. The intraoral scanning system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors is configured to identify the identified near-IR image taken at the angle and position that approximates the relative angle and position between the viewing window and the 3D model of the patient's dental arch by determining a plurality of images that approximate the relative angle and position between the viewing window and the 3D model of the patient's dental arch and averaging the plurality of images to form the identified near-IR image. 6. The intraoral scanning system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors is configured to display the viewing window by displaying a loop comprising the viewing window. 7. The intraoral scanning system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors is configured to change the relative position between the viewing window and the 3D model of the patient's dental arch based on input from the user by changing one or more of: an angle of the 3D model of the patient's dental arch relative to the viewing window, a rotation of the 3D model of the patient's dental arch relative to the viewing window, and a portion of the patient's dental arch adjacent to the viewing window. 8. The intraoral scanning system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors is configured to change the relative position between the viewing window and the 3D model of the patient's dental arch based on input from the user by changing the position of the viewing window over the 3D model of the patient's dental arch. 9. The intraoral scanning system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors is configured to identify from both the 3D model of the patient's dental arch and the plurality of near-IR images of the patient's dental arch taken from different angles and positions relative to the patient's dental arch, a second image that approximates the relative angle and position between the viewing window relative to the 3D model of the patient's dental arch that is one or more of: a visible light image and a florescent image; and wherein the one or more processors is configured to display the second image concurrently with the identified near-IR image. 10. An intraoral scanning system, the system comprising: a wand having at least one image sensor and a near-infrared (near-IR) light source; a display output; and one or more processors operably connected to the wand and the display output, the one or more processors configured to: display a three-dimensional (3D) model of a patient's dental arch on the display output; display a viewing window over a portion of the 3D model of the patient's dental arch on the display output; receive an input from the user changing relative positions of the viewing window and the 3D model of the patient's dental arch; continuously identify, as the relative positions of the viewing window and the 3D model of the patient's dental arch change, an identified near-IR image derived from a plurality of near-IR images of the patient's dental arch that were taken from different angles and positions relative to the patient's dental arch, wherein the identified near-IR image approximates an angle and position that is between the viewing window and the 3D model of the patient's dental arch; and display the identified near-IR image on the display output. 11. The intraoral scanning system of claim 10 , wherein the identified near-IR image derived from the plurality of near-IR images of the patient's dental arch that were taken from different angles and positions relative to the patient's dental arch comprises a near-IR image selected from the plurality of near-IR images. 12. The intraoral scanning system of claim 10 , wherein the display output comprises a touch screen and wherein the user input is received through the touch screen. 13. The intraoral scanning system of claim 10 , wherein the identified near-IR image derived from a plurality of near-IR images of the patient's dental arch that were taken from different angles and positions relative to the patient's dental arch comprises an average of the near-IR image selected from the plurality of near-IR images. 14.
