Official abstract text for this publication.
An apparatus for manufacturing an elastic composite structure for an absorbent sanitary product includes an anvil with weld pattern comprising at least one anchoring region and at least one deactivating region. The anchoring region includes anchoring welds that form anchoring bonds that fuse facing web layers and anchor elastic thread(s) in position relative to the facing web layers. The deactivating region includes a break bar constructed to sever the thread(s). A method of manufacturing the elastic composite structure includes positioning a tensioned elastic thread between web layers, fusing the web layers to form an anchored zone that includes anchoring bonds that fuse the web layers and anchor the tensioned elastic thread therebetween, and cutting the thread to form a deactivated zone between adjacent portions of the anchored zone that is free of tensioned threads. The method further includes fusing the web layers within the deactivated zone.

What is claimed is: 1. A bonding apparatus for manufacturing an elastic composite structure comprising an elastic thread secured between a pair of facing web layers, the bonding apparatus comprising: a rotary anvil having a face; a first curved contour including a plurality of first anchoring welds that extend outward from the face of the rotary anvil with adjacent first anchoring welds constructed to form pairs of adjacent first anchoring bonds that fuse the pair of facing web layers together and anchor the elastic thread passing between the adjacent first anchoring bonds in position relative to the pair of facing web layers; a curved break bar extending outward from the face of the rotary anvil and which is constructed to sever the elastic thread; and wherein the curved break bar at least partially overlaps the first curved contour in a circumferential direction of the rotary anvil to provide a continuous running contact of the bonding apparatus with a blade horn during operation. 2. The bonding apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a second curved contour including a plurality of second anchoring welds extending outward from the face of the rotary anvil with adjacent second anchoring welds constructed to form pairs of adjacent second anchoring bonds that further fuse the pair of facing web layers together and anchor the first elastic thread passing between the adjacent second anchoring bonds in position relative to the pair of facing web layers. 3. The bonding apparatus of claim 2 further comprising a second curved break bar extending outward from the face of the rotary anvil and constructed to sever the elastic thread, wherein the first and second contours of anchoring welds are between the break bars. 4. The bonding apparatus of claim 3 wherein the first and second break bars are further constructed to form bonds between the pair of facing web layers. 5. The bonding apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a curved contour including a plurality of second anchoring welds extending outward from the face of the rotary anvil, the plurality of second anchoring welds and the curved break bar each define portions of a common curved contour extending outward from the face of the rotary anvil. 6. The bonding apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a horn having a working surface spaced apart from a working surface of the break bar and land surfaces of the plurality of first anchoring welds. 7. The bonding apparatus of claim 6 wherein the horn comprises an ultrasonic horn. 8. The bonding apparatus of claim 6 further comprising means for oscillating the horn between a lowered position wherein the horn communicates with the rotary anvil to form the first anchoring bonds and a raised position wherein the horn is spaced away from the rotary anvil at a distance that prevents formation of the first anchoring bonds. 9. The bonding apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a tensioning device configured to selectively cause the elastic thread severed by the break bar to snap back in a downstream direction relative to upstream travel of the pair of facing web layers and resume downstream travel between the pair of facing web layers after a predetermined period of time. 10. The bonding apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a plurality of laminating welds constructed to form laminating bonds that fuse the pair of facing web layers together without anchoring the elastic thread in position relative to the pair of facing web layers. 11. The bonding apparatus of claim 1 wherein the break bar is further constructed to form a bond between the pair of facing web layers. 12. The bonding apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first curved contour is sinusoidal. 13. The bonding apparatus of claim 1 wherein the break bar includes at least one groove. 14. The bonding apparatus of claim 1 wherein further comprising a second curved break bar extending outward from the face of the rotary anvil and is constructed to sever the elastic thread, wherein the first curved contour is between the break bars. 15. The bonding apparatus of claim 14 wherein the first and second break bars are further constructed to form bonds between the pair of facing web layers.
