Official abstract text for this publication.
A reel based closure device includes a housing, a tension member, a spool that is rotatably positioned within the housing, and a tightening component that is positioned axially above the spool and that is operably coupled therewith so that an operation of the tightening component causes the spool to rotate within the housing to wind the tension member about the spool. The reel based closure device also includes a coupling component that is separate from the tension member and that frictionally engages with a distal end of the tension member so that the coupling component is removably fixed to the tension member. The spool component includes a coupling feature within which the coupling component is positioned to attach the tension member to the spool.

What is claimed is: 1. A reel based closure device comprising: a housing having an interior region; a spool rotatably positioned within the interior region of the housing; a tightening member rotatably coupled with the housing and operably coupled with the spool such that an operation of the tightening member causes the spool to rotate within the housing in a first direction to wind a tension member about the spool; a central boss that extends axially in the interior region of the housing, the central boss having a distal end that includes or defines an axially extending gap; and a reinforcement spring positioned within the axially extending gap of the central boss, the reinforcement spring being configured to reinforce the central boss. 2. The reel based closure device of claim 1 , wherein the reinforcement spring is a metal component have a U-shaped configuration. 3. The reel based closure device of claim 1 , wherein the reinforcement spring includes an aperture that engages a projection positioned on an inner surface of the central boss to lock or retain the reinforcement spring within the axially extending gap of the central boss. 4. The reel based closure device of claim 1 , wherein the central boss is configured to allow the tightening member to be moved axially upward relative to the housing and to maintain the tightening member in an axially raised position relative to the housing. 5. The reel based closure device of claim 4 , wherein a top end of the central boss includes an annular projection that is operably coupled with the tightening member to maintain the tightening member in the axially raised position relative to the housing. 6. The reel based closure device of claim 1 , wherein the reel based closure device further comprises a drive member that is positioned axially above the spool and operably coupled therewith to allow the spool to rotate in the first direction within the housing's interior region while preventing rotation of the spool in a second direction, and wherein the drive member is axially moveable relative to the spool to uncouple the drive member from the spool and thereby enable the spool to rotate within the housing's interior region in the second direction to unwind the tension member from about the spool. 7. The reel based closure device of claim 1 , wherein the central boss is coupled with a coupling member that is attachable to a bottom end of the housing, and wherein the central boss extends through a central aperture of the spool such that the spool is rotatable about the central boss. 8. A reel based closure device comprising: a housing having an interior region; a spool rotatably positioned within the interior region of the housing; a tightening member rotatably coupled with the housing and operably coupled with the spool such that an operation of the tightening member causes the spool to rotate within the housing in a first direction to wind a tension member about the spool; a central boss that extends axially in the interior region of the housing, the central boss having a distal end that includes or defines an axially extending gap; and a reinforcement member that is positioned within the central boss to reinforce the central boss. 9. The reel based closure device of claim 8 , wherein the reinforcement member is a reinforcement spring that is positioned within the axially extending gap of the central boss. 10. The reel based closure device of claim 9 , wherein the reinforcement spring includes an aperture that engages a projection positioned on an inner surface of the central boss to lock or retain the reinforcement spring within the axially extending gap of the central boss. 11. The reel based closure device of claim 9 , wherein the reinforcement spring is a metal component have a U-shaped configuration. 12. The reel based closure device of claim 11 , wherein the reinforcement spring is configured for axial insertion through a bottom end of the central boss into the axially extending gap. 13. The reel based closure device of claim 8 , wherein the central boss extends through a central aperture of the spool such that the spool is rotatable about the central boss. 14. The reel based closure device of claim 13 , wherein the central boss is coupled with a coupling member that is attachable to a bottom end of the housing. 15. The reel based closure device of claim 8 , wherein the central boss is configured to support or maintain the tightening member in an engaged position in which the tightening member is operably coupled with the spool and in a disengaged position in which the tightening member is operably decoupled from the spool. 16. The reel based closure device of claim 15 , wherein the tightening member is axially moveable relative to the housing between the engaged position and the disengaged position. 17. The reel based closure device of claim 16 , wherein a top end of the central boss includes an annular projection that is configured to support or maintain the tightening member in the engaged position and the disengaged position. 18. A method of assembling a reel based closure device, the method comprising: providing a housing having an interior; positioning a spool within the interior of the housing so that the spool is rotatable within the interior of the housing; positioning a central boss within the interior of the housing so that the central boss extends axially in the interior of the housing, the central boss having a distal end that includes or defines an axially extending gap; coupling a tightening member with the housing so that the tightening member is rotatable about the housing; operably coupling the tightening member and the spool such that an operation of the tightening member causes the spool to rotate within the housing in a first direction to wind a tension member about the spool; and positioning a reinforcement spring within the axially extending gap of the central boss to reinforce the central boss. 19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the reinforcement spring is a metal component have a U-shaped configuration. 20. The method of claim 18 , wherein positioning the reinforcement spring within the axially extending gap of the central boss comprising axially inserting the reinforcement spring through a bottom end of the central boss.
