A horizontal shaft electric powerhead includes an electric motor, a battery, a housing, and a base plate. The electric motor includes a horizontal output shaft configured to rotate about a horizontal axis of rotation and has a power rating of 2,500 or fewer watts. The battery includes a plurality of lithium-ion battery cells and is coupled to the electric motor. The housing has a standard cross-sectional footprint so that the electric powerhead has substantially the same volume as a comparable small internal combustion engine. The base plate is configured to be fastened to a mounting surface and includes a plurality of openings arranged in a standard horizontal shaft engine support pattern.

What is claimed is: 1. A horizontal shaft electric powerhead, comprising: an electric motor comprising a horizontal output shaft configured to rotate about a horizontal axis of rotation, wherein the electric motor has a power rating of 2,500 or fewer watts; a battery including a plurality of lithium-ion battery cells, the battery coupled to the electric motor; a housing having a cross-sectional footprint substantially the same as 174.5 in 2 ; and a base plate configured to be fastened to a mounting surface, the base plate comprising a plurality of openings arranged in a horizontal shaft engine support pattern. 2. The electric powerhead of claim 1 , wherein the base plate comprises a bottom surface configured to contact the mounting surface, and wherein the height of the axis of rotation of the output shaft above the bottom surface is 4.17 inches. 3. The electric powerhead of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of openings comprises four openings arranged in a square, each opening positioned 2.56 inches from two other openings, wherein the axis of rotation is equidistant from each of the four openings. 4. The electric powerhead of claim 1 , wherein the battery is configured to be attachable and removable from the electric motor without the use of tools. 5. The electric powerhead of claim 1 , wherein the battery is configured to be attachable and removable without removing the electric powerhead from a mounted position. 6. The electric powerhead of claim 1 , wherein the battery is positioned on an opposite side of the electric powerhead relative to the base plate. 7. The electric powerhead of claim 1 , wherein motor comprises a rotor configured to rotate about the axis of rotation of the output shaft, and wherein the electric powerhead comprises a cooling fan coupled to the rotor. 8. The electric powerhead of claim 1 , wherein the horizontal output shaft has a diameter of 0.71 inches, 0.75 inches, or 0.79 inches. 9. The electric powerhead of claim 1 , wherein a width of the housing is substantially the same as 14.3 inches, and the depth of the housing is substantially the same as 12.2 inches. 10. The electric powerhead of claim 1 , wherein a height of the housing is substantially the same as 13.6 inches. 11. A horizontal shaft electric powerhead, comprising: an electric motor comprising a horizontal output shaft configured to rotate about a horizontal axis of rotation, wherein the electric motor has a power rating of 2,500 or fewer watts; a battery including a plurality of lithium-ion battery cells, the battery coupled to the electric motor; a housing having a cross-sectional footprint substantially the same as 159.1 in 2 ; and a base plate configured to be fastened to a mounting surface so that the height of the horizontal output shaft above the mounting surface is 4.17 inches. 12. The horizontal shaft electric powerhead of claim 11 , wherein the horizontal output shaft has a diameter of 0.71 inches, 0.75 inches, or 0.79 inches. 13. The electric powerhead of claim 11 , wherein the battery is configured to be attachable and removable without removing the electric powerhead from a mounted position. 14. The electric powerhead of claim 11 , wherein a width of the housing is substantially the same as 13.0 inches, and the depth of the housing is substantially the same as 11.7 inches. 15. The electric powerhead of claim 14 , wherein a height of the housing is substantially the same as 13.0 inches. 16. A horizontal shaft electric powerhead, comprising: an electric motor comprising a horizontal output shaft configured to rotate about a horizontal axis of rotation, wherein the electric motor has a power rating of 2,500 or fewer watts; a battery including a plurality of lithium-ion battery cells, the battery coupled to the electric motor; a housing having a cross-sectional footprint substantially the same as 186.5 in 2 ; and a base plate configured to be fastened to a mounting surface. 17. The horizontal shaft electric powerhead of claim 16 , wherein, when the base plate is fastened to the mounting surface, the height of the axis of rotation of the output shaft above a bottom surface of the base plate is 4.17 inches. 18.
