Electrolytes and electrolyte additives for energy storage devices comprising a sulfonate ester compound are disclosed. The energy storage device comprises a first electrode and a second electrode, wherein at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode is a Si-based electrode, a separator between the first electrode and the second electrode, an electrolyte, and at least one electrolyte additive selected from a sulfonate ester compound.

What is claimed is: 1. An energy storage device comprising: a first electrode and a second electrode, wherein one or both of the first electrode and the second electrode is a Si-based electrode; a separator between the first electrode and the second electrode; an electrolyte; and at least one electrolyte additive comprising a sulfonate ester compound; wherein the sulfonate ester compound is of formula (I): where R1 and R2 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of H, alkyl, fluoro-alkyl, alkylene, alkenyl, alkenylene, alkynyl, alkynylene, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylene, aryl, arylene, heteroaryl, heteroalkyl, heteroalkylene and heterocycloalkylene, where the heteroatom in said heteroaryl, heteroalkyl, heteroalkylene and heterocycloalkylene group is N or S; and wherein said Si-based electrode comprises silicon particles having an average particle size between about 10 nm and about 40 μm and where silicon is the majority of the active material used in the electrode; and wherein the electrolyte additive is selected from the group consisting of Phenyl vinylsulfonate (PVSA) (CAS: 1562-34-1); Pentafluorophenyl vinylsulfonate (CAS: 452905-58-7); benzyl vinyl sulfonate; phenoxy ethenesulfonate; [dimethyl(phenyl)silyl]ethenesulfonate (CAS: 62381-62-8); 3-phenylpropyl ethenesulfonate (CAS: 75391-23-0); (4-ethenylperoxysulfanyloxyphenyl) ethenesulfonate; Methyl ethenesulfonate (CAS: 1562-31-8); ethyl ethenesulfonate (CAS: 4058-26-8); propan-2-yl ethenesulfonate (CAS: 3851-91-0); propyl ethenesulfonate; 1-butyl ethenesulfonate (CAS: 3851-92-1); neopentyl ethenesulfonate (CAS: 75391-24-1); N-Hexyl vinyl sulfonate; Allyl ethenesulfonate (CAS: 7459-72-9); 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl ethenesulfonate; 2-cyanoethyl ethenesulfonate; Tricyclo[5.2.1.02,6]decane-4,8-dimethanol di(vinyl sulfonate); Glycerol tri(vinyl sulfonate), Trimethylolpropane tri(vinyl sulfonate), phenyl prop-1-ene-2-sulfonate; ethyl (E)-prop-1-ene-1-sulfonate; phenyl 2-(4-cyanophenyl)ethenesulfonate (CAS: 918341-27-2); phenyl prop-2-ene-1-sulfonate; [dimethyl(phenyl)silyl] prop-2-ene-1-sulfonate (CAS: 62381-58-2); 1O′-phenyl 1-O-prop-2-enyl prop-2-ene-1,1-disulfonate; phenyl 2-methylprop-2-ene-1-sulfonate; phenyl (E)-but-2-ene-1-sulfonate; phenyl 1-oxobut-3-ene-1-sulfonate; 2,3,4,5,6-Pentafluorophenyl 2-thiophenesulfonate (CAS: 663175-91-5), phenyl cyclopropanesulfonate; (2-fluorophenyl) cyclopropanesulfonate; (4-fluorophenyl) cyclopropanesulfonate; phenyl cyclopentanesulfonate; ethenyl ethanesulfonate; Vinyl benzenesulfonate; ethenyl phenylmethanesulfonate; prop-2-enyl phenylmethanesulfonate; Allyl p-toluenesulfonate (CAS 4873-09-0); 1,2,3,6-Tetrahydropyridin-4-yl trifluoromethanesulfonate (CAS: 1187848-82-3); Acetoxime o-(2,4,6-trimethylphenylsulfonate) (CAS: 81549-07-7); (4-Methylidenecyclohexyl)methyl methanesulfonate (CAS: 1228182-62-4); Propargyl p-toluenesulfonate (CAS: 6165-76-0); Propargyl benzenesulfonate (CAS: 6165-75-9); 3-Butynyl p-toluenesulfonate (CAS: 23418-85-1); 3-(1-Butynyl)-4-toluenesulfonate (CAS: 23418-85-1); Propargyl p-toluenesulfonate (CAS: 6165-76-0); Propargyl benzenesulfonate (CAS: 6165-75-9); 3-Butynyl p-toluenesulfonate (CAS: 23418-85-1); and 3-(1-Butynyl)-4-toluenesulfonate (CAS: 23418-85-1). 2. The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein the second electrode is a Si-dominant electrode. 3. The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein the second electrode comprises a self-supporting composite material. 4. The energy storage device of claim 3 , wherein the composite material comprises: greater than 0% and less than about 90% by weight of silicon particles, and greater than 0% and less than about 90% by weight of one or more types of carbon phases, wherein at least one of the one or more types of carbon phases is a substantially continuous phase that holds the composite material film together such that the silicon particles are distributed throughout the composite material film. 5. The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein the electrolyte further comprises fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC). 6. The energy storage device of claim 5 , wherein the electrolyte is free of non-fluorine containing cyclic carbonate.
