Pharmaceutical compositions of the invention comprise functionalized lactone derivatives having a disease-modifying action in the treatment of diseases associated with dysregulation of 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 7 activity.

What is claimed is: 1. A compound according to the following formula, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein n is 2; each of R 1a and R 1b is C 1-6 linear alkyl; and R 3 is optionally substituted heteroaryl. 2. The compound of claim 1 , wherein each of R 1a and R 1b is ethyl. 3. The compound of claim 1 , wherein R 3 is optionally substituted pyridyl. 4. The compound of claim 3 , wherein R 3 is unsubstituted pyridyl. 5. The compound of claim 3 , wherein R 3 is substituted pyridyl. 6. The compound of claim 1 , wherein R 3 is optionally substituted 2-pyridyl, optionally substituted 3-pyridyl, or optionally substituted 4-pyridyl. 7. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound according to claim 1 , or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; and one or more pharmaceutically acceptable carriers.
