Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods of preventing or decreasing PEDv and/or Salmonella bacteria in animal feed, feed ingredients, and pet food are provided. The methods utilize generally safe chemical mitigants, such as medium chain fatty acids, essential oils, and sodium bisulfate. The chemical mitigants are introduced to the feed or feed ingredients at inclusion rates selected so as to prevent or decrease PEDv and/or Salmonella bacteria in the animal feed, feed ingredients, or pet rood. The methods are particularly suitable for use in post-processing treatment of animal feed, feed ingredients, or pet food that will be transported and stored for multiple days or weeks.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method of inhibiting Salmonella bacteria in animal feed ingredients, the method comprising: introducing a chemical mitigant to the or animal feed ingredients to form supplemented animal feed ingredients, wherein the chemical mitigant consists of a blend of caproic acid, caprylic acid, and capric acid, wherein the chemical mitigant is introduced at a rate of from about 0.01 weight % to about 5 weight % of the animal feed ingredients, wherein the or animal feed ingredients are selected from the group consisting of blood meal, porcine meat and bone meal (MBM), spray-dried animal plasma, feather meal, avian blood meal, poultry by-product meal, vitamin D, lysine hydrochloride, choline chloride, soybean meal, or a combination thereof, and wherein the supplemented animal feed ingredients consist of the chemical mitigant and the animal feed ingredients. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing the supplemented animal feed ingredients to an animal after a storage period of at least about 42 days. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the supplemented animal feed ingredients are maintained at room temperature throughout the storage period. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the chemical mitigant is introduced at a rate of from about 1 weight % to about 2.5 weight % of the animal feed ingredients. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein inhibiting comprises reducing measurable levels of Salmonella , preventing Salmonella from growing, decreasing a rate of growth of Salmonella , or combinations thereof, in the animal feed ingredients relative to identical animal feed ingredients lacking the chemical mitigant. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein introducing the chemical mitigant to the animal feed ingredients comprises applying and mixing the chemical mitigant with the animal feed ingredients after they have been fully formed. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the animal feed ingredients are selected from the group consisting of blood meal, porcine meat and bone meal (MBM), spray-dried animal plasma, vitamin D, lysine hydrochloride, choline chloride, and soybean meal. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the animal feed ingredients are selected from the group consisting of vitamin D, lysine hydrochloride, choline chloride, and soybean meal. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the animal feed ingredients are selected from the group consisting of blood meal, porcine meat and bone meal (MBM), and spray-dried animal plasma. 10. A method of inhibiting Salmonella bacteria in animal feed ingredients, the method comprising: introducing a chemical mitigant to the animal feed ingredients to form supplemented animal feed ingredients, wherein the chemical mitigant consists of a blend of caproic acid, caprylic acid, and capric acid, wherein the chemical mitigant is introduced at a rate of from about 0.01 weight % to about 5 weight % of the animal feed ingredients, wherein the animal feed ingredients are selected from the group consisting of one or more rendered protein meals, and wherein the supplemented animal feed ingredients consist of the chemical mitigant and the animal feed ingredients. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the one or more rendered protein meals contain one or more of blood meal, porcine meat and bone meal (MBM), feather meal, avian blood meal, and poultry by-product meal.
