Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A collection system for collecting outflow from a hysteroscopic surgical procedure includes a plurality of collection vessels each including a flexible body defining an internal volume and transitionable between a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration. The collection system further includes connection tubing coupling adjacent collection vessels with one another, outflow tubing coupled to at least one of the collection vessels, and a plurality of retention canisters. Each retention canister includes a rigid body. Each collection vessel is configured to engage a corresponding retention canister such that each rigid body at least partially receives one of the flexible bodies therein.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A surgical system, comprising: a first surgical instrument; a surgical drape; a vacuum pump; an outflow tubing including a base end, a first end, and a second end, the outflow tubing including a base tubing defining the base end of the outflow tubing and first and second tubing branches extending from the base tubing, the first and second tubing branches defining the first and second ends, respectively, of the outflow tubing, wherein the base tubing is configured to connect to the vacuum pump at the base end of the outflow tubing, the first tubing branch is configured to connect to the first surgical instrument at the first end of the outflow tubing, and the second tubing branch configured to connect to the surgical drape at the second end of the outflow tubing; and a first flow restrictor disposed within the second tubing branch to vary an amount of suction through the second tubing branch as compared to the first tubing branch when suction is applied from the vacuum pump through the base tubing. 2. The surgical system according to claim 1 , wherein the first surgical instrument is a tissue resection instrument. 3. The surgical system according to claim 1 , wherein the first surgical instrument is a hysteroscope. 4. The surgical system according to claim 1 , further comprising a vacuum tubing coupling the vacuum pump with the collection vessel to thereby establish suction through the base tubing and the first and second tubing branches of the outflow tubing. 5. The surgical system according to claim 1 , further comprising a control console configured to control the first surgical instrument and the vacuum pump. 6. The surgical system according to claim 1 , further comprising: a second surgical instrument, wherein the outflow tubing further includes a third end and a third tubing branch extending from the base tubing and defining the third end, the third tubing branch configured to connect to the second surgical instrument at the third end of the outflow tubing. 7. The surgical according to claim 6 , further comprising a second flow restrictor disposed within one of the second tubing branch or the third tubing branch, the second flow restrictor configured to restrict flow differently than the first flow restrictor. 8. The surgical according to claim 6 , wherein the first surgical instrument is a tissue resection instrument and wherein the second surgical instrument is a hysteroscope.
