What is claimed is: 1. A glenoid implant for a shoulder prosthesis for implantation in the glenoid of a scapula of a shoulder joint wherein the shoulder joint includes a humerus, the glenoid implant comprising: an articular body comprising an articular surface and a plate, wherein the plate comprising: a first side, a second side, and an external lateral surface, the first side configured to receive a supplemental piece adapted to articulate with the humerus, the second side configured to be oriented toward the glenoid; a central protrusion extending from the second side, the central protrusion surrounding an opening; and a plurality of peripheral receptacles extending through the first side and the second side, each of the peripheral receptacles comprises a threaded surface adapted to receive a peripheral screw; a central fixation element for anchoring the articular body in the glenoid, wherein the central fixation element comprises a lateral external surface that has a threaded portion and is traversed by an opening that extends between a superior end and an inferior end; and a distal anchor screw for locking rotation of the central fixation element with respect to the glenoid, the distal anchor screw comprising a proximal head and a threaded stem extending distally from the proximal head, the proximal head disposed entirely within the central fixation element, wherein the threading of the lateral external surface of the central fixation element is in a first direction, while the threading on the stem of the distal anchor screw is in a second direction that is opposite from the first direction, whereby the opposed threading directions result in improved locking, with respect to the glenoid, of a sub-assembly formed by the central fixation element and the distal anchor screw when implanted in the glenoid. 2. The glenoid implant of claim 1 , wherein the articular surface is hemispherical. 3. The glenoid implant of claim 1 , wherein the articular component comprises a hollow configured to receive the body of the plate. 4. The glenoid implant of claim 1 , wherein the opening is configured to receive the articular component. 5. The glenoid implant of claim 1 , wherein the plate comprises a circular cross-sectional shape. 6. The glenoid implant of claim 1 , wherein the second side of the body is planar. 7. The glenoid implant of claim 1 , wherein the opening comprises an enlarged portion, the enlarged portion comprising an enlarged cross-sectional area compared to adjacent portions of the opening. 8. The glenoid implant of claim 1 , wherein the distal anchor screw comprises an opening in a proximal end of the proximal head. 9. The glenoid implant of claim 1 , further comprising an insert disposed in one of the peripheral receptacles, the insert comprising the threaded surface. 10. The glenoid implant of claim 9 , wherein the insert is in rotational engagement with said one of the peripheral receptacles. 11. The glenoid implant of claim 9 , wherein the insert comprises a spherical external surface. 12. The glenoid implant of claim 9 , wherein the peripheral receptacles comprises four receptacles. 13. The glenoid implant of claim 1 , wherein an end portion of the central protrusion is tronconical. 14. The glenoid implant of claim 1 , wherein the external lateral surface of the plate is tronconical. 15. The glenoid implant of claim 1 , wherein the threading on the lateral external surface of the central fixation element is a self-tapping thread. 16. The glenoid implant of claim 1 , wherein the opening in the central fixation element includes a superior portion and an inferior portion with a circular cross-sectional shape, wherein the superior portion is threaded to receive the supplemental piece adapted to articulate with the humerus.
