Systems, methods, and apparatus for selection of crop-input varieties. Multiple varieties of seeds may be planted with a row unit seed hopper having a plurality of compartments for receiving seed, each compartment having a seed passage through which seeds pass under gravity. A seed transfer actuator is disposed within or below the row unit seed hopper and is in communication with each of the seed passages and is configured to selectively open the seed passage of one of the plurality of compartments to permit the seeds therein to pass into the seed pool of a seed meter while closing the seed passage of other of the plurality of compartments to prevent the seeds from the other plurality of compartments passing into the seed pool of the seed meter.

What is claimed is: 1. A planter row unit configured to plant multiple varieties of seed, the planter row unit comprising: a seed hopper having a plurality of compartments for receiving seeds; a plurality of cylindrical seed augers, each disposed between one associated compartment of the seed hopper and a seed pool area, each seed auger configured to rotate around a longitudinal axis, wherein an inlet end of each seed auger is vertically lower than an outlet of the seed auger; a plurality of seed transfer actuators, each of the seed transfer actuators coupled to drive one associated seed auger of the plurality of seed augers to transfer seed along the longitudinal axis from the associated compartment to the seed pool area; and a seed meter adapted to dispense the seed communicated to the seed pool area from the compartments of the seed hopper. 2. The planter row unit of claim 1 , wherein each seed auger is disposed below the associated compartment of the seed hopper. 3. The planter row unit of claim 1 , further comprising a fill level sensor disposed to detect presence of seed within the seed pool area above a fill level. 4. The planter row unit of claim 3 , wherein the fill level sensor is configured to determine an amount of seed within the seed pool area. 5. The planter row unit of claim 1 , further comprising a seed conveyor disposed to receive the seeds dispensed from the seed meter and to deposit the received seeds into a seed trench. 6. The planter row unit of claim 1 , further comprising a seed tube disposed to receive the seeds dispensed from the seed meter and to deposit the received seeds into a seed trench. 7. The planter row unit of claim 1 , wherein the planter row unit has only one seed meter. 8. The planter row unit of claim 1 , wherein each seed auger is oriented at an angle between 0° and 90° relative to a horizontal plane. 9. The planter row unit of claim 8 , wherein each seed auger is oriented at an angle between 10° and 80° relative to a horizontal plane. 10. The planter row unit of claim 9 , wherein each seed auger is oriented at an angle between 10° and 40° relative to a horizontal plane. 11. The planter row unit of claim 1 , wherein each seed transfer actuator is further coupled to drive one of a plurality of pre-loading augers to load seed into a respective seed auger. 12. The planter row unit of claim 11 , wherein each of the plurality of pre-loading augers is configured agitate seed at a bottom of a respective compartment when rotated by the respective seed transfer actuator. 13. A method of planting multiple varieties of seed with a single row unit, the method comprising: identifying a first seed variety to be planted at a first location within a field, the first seed variety selected from a plurality of seed varieties stored within compartments of a seed hopper; actuating a first seed transfer actuator to drive a first seed auger to transfer seed of the first seed variety along a longitudinal axis of the first seed auger from a first compartment of the seed hopper at a first vertical position at an inlet end of the first seed auger to a seed pool area at a second, higher vertical position at an outlet end the first seed auger; dispensing the seed of the first seed variety from the seed pool area to the first location within the field with a seed meter; identifying a second seed variety to be planted at a second location within the field, the second seed variety selected from the plurality of seed varieties stored within the compartments of the seed hopper; actuating a second seed transfer actuator to drive a second seed auger to transfer seed of the second seed variety along a longitudinal axis of the second seed auger from a second compartment of the seed hopper to the seed pool area; and dispensing the seed of the second seed variety from the seed pool area to the second location within the field with the seed meter. 14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising determining a level of seed within the seed pool area. 15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising actuating the first seed transfer actuator or the second seed transfer actuator when the level of seed within the seed pool area is below a threshold. 16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising estimating a time to a boundary between the first location and the second location. 17. The method of claim 16 , wherein actuating the second seed transfer actuator begins and actuating the first seed transfer actuator ends when the time to the boundary is below a threshold. 18. The method of claim 16 , further comprising stopping the first seed transfer actuator before reaching the boundary, and actuating the second seed transfer actuator before reaching the boundary.
