The present disclosure describes a crumpled form of Mxene materials, and methods of making and using these novel compositions.

What is claimed: 1. An electrochemical device comprising a crumpled MXene or a composition comprising a crumpled MXene, wherein the crumpled MXene comprises a two dimensional crystalline transition metal carbide, nitride, or carbonitride arranged in a three-dimensional interpenetrating mesoporous structure, the electrochemical device comprising an electrode, an energy storage device, a gas storage device, or a gas sensing device. 2. The electrochemical device of claim 1 , wherein the electrochemical device is an electrode. 3. The electrochemical device of claim 1 , wherein the electrochemical device is an energy storage device. 4. The electrochemical device of claim 3 , wherein the energy storage device is an ion storage battery. 5. The electrochemical device of claim 4 , wherein the ion storage battery is a lithium ion storage battery. 6. The electrochemical device of claim 4 , wherein the ion storage battery is a sodium ion storage battery. 7. The electrochemical device of claim 3 , wherein the energy storage device is a supercapacitor. 8. The electrochemical device of claim 1 , wherein the electrochemical device is a gas storage device. 9. The electrochemical device of claim 1 , wherein the electrochemical device is a gas sensing device. 10. The electrochemical device of claim 1 , wherein the gas sensing device comprises a transition metal cation or an organic dye salt cation. 11. A composite, comprising: (a) a crumpled MXene or a composition comprising a crumpled MXene having surface functionalities, wherein the crumpled MXene comprises a two dimensional crystalline transition metal carbide, nitride, or carbonitride arranged in a three-dimensional interpenetrating mesoporous structure; and (b) a polymer or copolymer, the polymer or copolymer bonding to the surface functionalities of the crumples MXene. 12. The composite of claim 11 , wherein the polymer or copolymer comprises oxygen-containing functional groups. 13. The composite of claim 12 , wherein the oxygen-containing functional groups comprise any one or more of —OH, —COO, and ═O. 14. The composite of claim 11 , wherein the polymer or copolymer comprises and amine functional groups. 15. The composite of claim 11 , wherein the polymer or copolymer and crumpled MXenes are present in a weight ratio range of from about 1:99 to about 98:2. 16. The composite of claim 15 , wherein the polymer comprises a polysaccharide. 17. The composite of claim 16 , wherein the polysaccharide comprises sodium alginate. 18. A crumpled MXene or a composition comprising a crumpled MXene, wherein the crumpled MXene comprises a two dimensional crystalline transition metal carbide, nitride, or carbonitride arranged in a three-dimensional interpenetrating mesoporous structure, the crumpled MXene or a composition comprising a crumpled MXene (a) comprises a structure having irregular pores with diameters between 100 and 400 nm, (b) a surface area in the range of from about 25 to about 75 m 2 /g. 19. The crumpled MXene or a composition comprising a crumpled MXene of claim 18 , wherein the crumpled MXene or a composition comprising a crumpled MXene comprises a structure having a surface area in the range of from about 25 to about 75 m 2 /g. 20. The crumpled MXene or a composition comprising a crumpled MXene of claim 18 , wherein the crumpled MXene or a composition comprising a crumpled MXene comprises a structure having irregular pores with diameters between 100 and 400 nm.
