Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An optical measurement device includes a light source, a first detector, and a second detector. The light source emits light to a measurement site of a patient and one or more detectors detect the light from the light source. At least a portion of a detector is translucent and the light passes through the translucent portion prior to reaching the measurement site. A detector receives the light after attenuation and/or reflection or refraction by the measurement site. A processor determines a light intensity of the light source, a light intensity through a tissue site, or a light intensity of reflected or refracted light based on light detected by the one or more detectors. The processor can estimate a concentration of an analyte at the measurement site or an absorption or reflection at the measurement site.

What is claimed is: 1. An optical measurement device comprising: a light source; a translucent detector positioned along a light path between the light source and a measurement site, the translucent detector comprising: a detecting region configured to detect incident light, the incident light emitted by the light source as it emerges from the light source prior to reaching the measurement site, the detecting region configured to detect attenuated light, the attenuated light having been attenuated by the measurement site, a translucent region through which light emitted by the light source passes prior to reaching the measurement site, and wherein the translucent detector is configured to generate a first signal indicative of an intensity of the incident light and a second signal indicative of an intensity of the attenuated light; and a processor configured to receive the first signal and second signal from the translucent detector, and determine a physiological parameter based at least in part on the first signal and the second signal. 2. The optical measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the detecting region is different from the translucent region. 3. The optical measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the detecting region overlaps with the translucent region. 4. The optical measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine an intensity of the incident light based at least in part on the first signal. 5. The optical measurement device of claim 4 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine the physiological parameter based at least in part on the determined intensity of the incident light. 6. The optical measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the physiological parameter corresponds to a blood glucose concentration. 7. The optical measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the translucent detector is proximal to the light source with respect to the measurement site, wherein the measurement site comprises non-biological material. 8. The optical measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the translucent detector is proximal to the light source with respect to the measurement site, wherein the measurement site comprises biological material. 9. The optical measurement device of claim 1 , further comprising a housing configured to house the light source and the translucent detector. 10. A method of determining a physiological parameter using an optical measurement device, the method comprising: causing a light source to emit light, wherein a translucent detector positioned along a light path between the light source and a measurement site detects incident light emitted by the light source as it emerges from the light source, wherein at least some light emitted by the light source passes through a portion of the translucent detector prior to reaching the measurement site; detecting, using the translucent detector, attenuated light, the attenuated light having been attenuated by the measurement site; receiving, using one or more hardware processors, a first signal generated by the translucent detector, the first signal corresponding to the detected incident light; receiving, using the one or more hardware processors, a second signal generated by the translucent detector, the second signal corresponding to the detected attenuated light; and determining, using the one or more hardware processor, a physiological parameter based at least in part on the first signal and second signal. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein a region of the translucent detector that detects the incident light is different from the portion of the translucent detector through which light passes to reach the measurement site. 12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first signal is indicative of an intensity of the incident light. 13. The method of claim 10 , the method further comprising determining an intensity of the incident light based at least in part on the first signal. 14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the physiological parameter corresponds to a blood glucose concentration. 15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the translucent detector is proximal to the light source with respect to the measurement site, wherein the measurement site comprises non-biological material. 16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the translucent detector is proximal to the light source with respect to the measurement site, wherein the measurement site comprises biological material.
