Disclosed are compounds that can modulate DDAH and the amount of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) in a subject. Also provided are pharmaceutical compositions comprising these compounds, as well as methods of using these compositions to treat and/or prevent diseases associated with elevated or low levels of DDAH and ADMA.

What is claimed is: 1. A compound defined by the formula: or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, wherein i) R 8 , R 9 , R 10 , R 11 , R 5 and R 4 are hydrogen and R 6 is methyl; or ii) R 8 , R 9 , R 10 , R 11 , R 6 , and R 5 are hydrogen and R 4 is methyl; or iii) R 8 , R 9 , R 10 , R 11 , R 6 , and R 5 are hydrogen and R 4 is chloro or floro; or iv) R 8 , R 9 , R 10 , R 11 , and R 6 are hydrogen, R 5 is methyl and R 4 is methoxy; or v) R 8 , R 9 , R 10 , R 11 , and R 5 are hydrogen, R 6 is methyl and R 4 is hydroxy; or vi) R 8 , R 9 , R 10 , R 11 , R 6 , and R 5 are hydrogen and R 4 is 2-(morpholin-4-yl)ethoxy; or vii) R 8 , R 9 , R 10 , R 11 , R 6 , and R 4 are hydrogen and R 5 is 2-(morpholin-4-yl)ethoxy; or viii) R 8 , R 9 , R 10 , R 11 , R 5 , and R 4 are hydrogen and R 6 is 2-(morpholin-4-yl)ethoxy. 2. The compound of claim 1 , wherein R 8 , R 9 , R 10 , R 11 , R 6 , and R 4 are hydrogen and R 5 is 2-(morpholin-4-yl)ethoxy. 3. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound of claim 1 . 4. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound of claim of claim 2 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
