Official abstract text for this publication.
Aspects herein are directed to an apparel item that promotes thermo-regulation through the use of engineered openings, venting, and/or stand-off structures. In exemplary aspects, 20-45% of the apparel item may comprise the engineered openings. Vents may be positioned on the apparel item in areas that experience high amounts of air flow to help channel air into the apparel item. The stand-off structures may be positioned on an inner-facing surface of the apparel item where they help to create a space between the apparel item and the wearer's body surface in which air can flow and help cool the wearer by promoting evaporative cooling.

An apparel item comprising: a textile material having a first portion and a second portion, wherein the first portion comprises a surface treatment that biases the first portion in a tensioned state and wherein the second portion is maintained in a tension-free resting state, and a slit positioned directly adjacent the first portion and between the first portion and the second portion, the slit comprising an opening extending through the textile material, wherein along the slit the first portion extends away from a surface plane of the textile material to form a stand-off structure. 2. The apparel item of claim 1 , wherein the surface treatment is a film. 3. The apparel item of claim 1 , wherein the stand-off structure and the opening comprises a vent configured to channel air from a first surface to a second surface of the textile material. 4. The apparel item of claim 1 , wherein a position associated with the vent is based on one or more of air flow maps and air pressure maps. 5. The apparel item of claim 1 , wherein the apparel item is an upper-torso garment and the first portion is positioned on a back panel of the upper-body garment.
