Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

In general, intelligent fuel dispensers are provided. In at least some implementations, an intelligent fuel dispenser can determine customer identities and/or other characteristics and provide customized fueling sessions based on the determined customer identities and/or other characteristics. In at least some implementations, the fuel dispenser includes a touchless interface allowing customers to complete fueling sessions with minimal physical contact with the fuel dispenser.

What is claimed is: 1. A system comprising: a fuel dispenser including a housing containing components for the dispensing of fuel from the fuel dispenser, a display screen disposed in the housing and configured to display a graphical user interface, the graphical user interface configured to receive touch inputs from a fuel dispenser user interacting with the graphical user interface to thereby control the dispensing of fuel from the fuel dispenser, an image sensor, and at least one data processor operatively connected to the display screen and the image sensor, the at least one data processor configured to receive data characterizing an image from the image sensor, the image including a visual depiction of a vehicle, determine vehicle identity information characterizing an identity of the vehicle based on the received data, wherein the vehicle identity information includes at least one of a make of the vehicle, a model of the vehicle, and a license plate number of the vehicle, provide the vehicle identity information to a remote user profile server, receive, from the remote user profile server, user profile data characterizing an identity of the fuel dispenser user, the user profile data being associated with the provided vehicle identity information, and when the fuel is being dispensed from the fuel dispenser, provide a targeted advertisement for display on the display screen based on the received user profile data. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one data processor is configured to determine at least one vehicle feature from the received data. 3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the targeted advertisement is stored in a memory of the fuel dispenser. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one data processor is configured to determine, based on the user profile, a time during a fuel dispensing transaction at which the targeted advertisement is to be displayed on the display of the fuel dispenser. 5. A fuel dispenser comprising: a housing containing components for the dispensing of fuel from the fuel dispenser; a display screen disposed in the housing and configured to display a graphical user interface, the graphical user interface configured to receive touch inputs from a fuel dispenser user interacting with the graphical user interface to thereby control the dispensing of fuel from the fuel dispenser; an image sensor disposed in the housing; and at least one data processor operatively connected to the display screen and the image sensor, the at least one data processor configured to receive data characterizing an image from the image sensor, the image including a visual depiction of a vehicle, determine vehicle identity information characterizing an identity of the vehicle from the received data, wherein the vehicle identity information includes at least one of a make of the vehicle, a model of the vehicle, and a license plate number of the vehicle, provide the vehicle identity information to a remote user profile server, receive, from the remote user profile server, user profile data characterizing an identity of the fuel dispenser user, the user profile data being associated with the provided vehicle identity information, and when the fuel is being dispensed from the fuel dispenser, provide a targeted advertisement for display on the display screen based on the received user profile data. 6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the at least one data processor is configured to determine at least one vehicle feature from the received data. 7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the targeted advertisement is stored in a memory of the fuel dispenser. 8. The system of claim 5 , wherein the at least one data processor is configured to determine, based on the user profile, a time during a fuel dispensing transaction at which the targeted advertisement is to be displayed on the display of the fuel dispenser. 9. A system comprising: at least one data processor; and a memory storing instructions configured to cause the at least one data processor to perform operations comprising: receiving data characterizing an image from an image sensor, the image being acquired by the image sensor and characterizing a visual depiction of a vehicle; determining vehicle identity information characterizing an identity of the vehicle based on the received data, wherein the identity information includes at least one of a make of the vehicle, a model of the vehicle, and a license plate number of the vehicle; providing the vehicle identity information to a remote user profile server; receiving, from the remote user profile server, user profile data characterizing an identity of the fuel dispenser user, the user profile data being associated with the provided vehicle identity information; and providing, based on the received user profile data, a targeted advertisement for display on a display screen of a fuel dispenser when fuel is being dispensed from the fuel dispenser, the display screen being configured to display the targeted advertisement via the graphical user interface, the graphical user interface configured to receive touch inputs from the fuel dispenser user interacting with the graphical user interface to thereby control the dispensing of the fuel from the fuel dispenser. 10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one data processor is configured to receive, from the display screen, touch data characterizing a touch input of the fuel dispenser user interacting with the graphical user interface responsive to the targeted advertisement, to determine a second targeted advertisement based on the touch data, and to provide the second targeted advertisement for display on the display screen. 11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one data processor is configured to provide the second targeted advertisement after the fuel has been dispensed from the fuel dispenser. 12. The fuel dispenser of claim 5 , wherein the at least one data processor is configured to receive, from the display screen, touch data characterizing a touch input of the fuel dispenser user interacting with the graphical user interface responsive to the targeted advertisement, to determine a second targeted advertisement based on the touch data, and to provide the second targeted advertisement for display on the display screen. 13. The fuel dispenser of claim 12 , wherein the at least one data processor is configured to provide the second targeted advertisement after the fuel has been dispensed from the fuel dispenser. 14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the operations further comprise: receiving, from the display screen, touch data characterizing a touch input of the fuel dispenser user interacting with the graphical user interface responsive to the targeted advertisement; determining a second targeted advertisement based on the touch data; and providing the second targeted advertisement for display on the display screen. 15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the second targeted advertisement is provided after the fuel has been dispensed from the fuel dispenser.
