Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A surgical instrument operable to sever tissue includes a body assembly and a selectively coupleable end effector assembly. The end effector assembly may include a transmission assembly and an end effector. The body assembly includes a trigger and a casing configured to couple with the transmission assembly. An information transmission system transmits instrument information received from a sensor, for example, to a secure server via a secure gateway connected to the instrument. The instrument may be previously tested on a calibration kit to pre-determine and load surgeon-specific settings onto the instrument prior to use.

We claim: 1. A surgical system, comprising: (a) a generator; (b) a surgical device configured for use during a surgical procedure, wherein the surgical device is in communication with the generator, wherein the generator is configured to power the surgical device during the surgical procedure, wherein the surgical device comprises: (i) an end effector configured to operate on tissue, wherein the end effector comprises a blade; (ii) at least one sensor configured to gather usage data acquired during use of the surgical device, wherein the at least one sensor is configured to measure a blade pressure of the usage data, and a steadiness of the blade of the usage data; (c) a receiving device configured to receive a set of transmitted information from the surgical device or the generator, wherein the set of transmitted information comprises the usage data acquired by the at least one sensor; and (d) a user interface configured to utilize the set of transmitted information received by the receiving device to display at least a portion of the transmitted information. 2. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the generator is incorporated into the surgical device. 3. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the surgical device is configured to transmit the set of usage data during the surgical procedure. 4. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the surgical device is configured to transmit the set of usage data after the surgical procedure. 5. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the receiving device is configured to establish communication with the surgical device. 6. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the surgical device is configured to transmit the set of usage data to the receiving device via the generator. 7. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one sensor is configured to measure a speed of the blade. 8. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the generator is configured to gather generator usage data during the surgical procedure, wherein the set of transmitted information further comprises the generator usage data. 9. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the surgical system further comprises a control module, wherein the at least one sensor is in communication with the control module such that the at least one sensor is configured to provide data acquired during use of the surgical device to the control module. 10. The surgical system of claim 9 , wherein the control module is configured to process the data provided by the at least one sensor to effect the delivery of power to the end effector. 11. A surgical system, comprising: (a) a generator configured to gather generator usage data acquired during a surgical procedure; (b) a surgical device configured for use during the surgical procedure, wherein the surgical device is in communication with the generator, wherein the generator is configured to power the surgical device during the surgical procedure, wherein the surgical device comprises; (i) an end effector configured to operate on tissue, and (ii) at least one sensor configured to gather usage data acquired during the use of the surgical device, wherein the at least one sensor is configured to measure a steadiness of the end effector; (c) a receiving device configured to receive a set of transmitted information from the surgical device or the generator, wherein the set of transmitted information comprises the generator usage data acquired during the surgical procedure; and (d) a user interface configured to utilize the set of transmitted information received by the receiving device to display at least a portion of the transmitted information. 12. The surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the transmitted information further comprises the usage data acquired by the at least one sensor. 13. The surgical system of claim 12 , wherein the generator usage data comprises a measurement in Watts and a measurement in voltage, each used by the generator, wherein the usage data acquired by the at least one sensor comprises a measurement of tissue impedance. 14. The surgical system of claim 12 , wherein either the generator usage data of the usage data acquired by the at least one sensor comprises a frequency measurement. 15. The surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the generator usage data comprises a frequency slope measurement and a current measurement. 16. A surgical system, comprising: (a) a generator configured to gather generator usage data acquired during a surgical procedure; (b) a surgical device configured for use during a surgical procedure, wherein the surgical device is in communication with the generator, wherein the generator is configured to power the surgical device during the surgical procedure, wherein the surgical device comprises: (i) an end effector configured to operate on tissue, wherein the end effector comprises an ultrasonic blade, and (ii) at least one sensor configured to gather sensor usage data acquired during use of the surgical device, wherein the at least one sensor is configured to measure an ultrasonic blade pressure; (c) a receiving device configured to receive a set of transmitted information from the surgical device or the generator, wherein the set of transmitted information comprises the generator usage data and the sensor usage data; and (d) a user interface configured to utilize the set of transmitted information received by the receiving device to display at least a portion of the transmitted information. 17. The surgical system of claim 16 , wherein the surgical device further comprises a trigger, wherein the at least one sensor comprises a force transducer configured to measure the force imparted on the trigger. 18. The surgical system of claim 16 , wherein the at least one sensor comprises a piezoelectric accelerometer. 19. The surgical system of claim 16 , wherein the at least one sensor is integrated into the surgical device.
