Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method of braiding a stent includes braiding a number of elongate filaments around a mandrel using tensioned braiding carriers without spooling the filaments to the tensioned braiding carriers to form a braided stent having atraumatic ends.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A mandrel for braiding a stent, comprising: a body having a distal end and a proximal end and an outer surface extending therebetween; a plurality of first projections disposed around only the distal end of the body; and a plurality of second projections extending radially outward from the outer surface of the body, the plurality of second projections disposed proximally of the plurality of first projections, the plurality of second projections each having a shape different from a shape of the plurality of first projections. 2. The mandrel of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of second projections each has a polygonal base. 3. The mandrel of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of second projections are pyramid shaped. 4. The mandrel of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of second projections have truncated or rounded tops. 5. The mandrel of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of second projections are arranged in a continuous pattern defining a plurality of helical channels between adjacent second projections. 6. The mandrel of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of helical channels extend at an angle from about 5 degrees to about 85 degrees from a longitudinal axis of the body. 7. The mandrel of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of first projections are tabs having a free end extending in a distal direction. 8. The mandrel of claim 1 , wherein the body includes a distal portion having a first outer diameter and a remainder of the body has a second outer diameter smaller than the first outer diameter, wherein the plurality of first projections and some of the plurality of second projections are disposed on the distal portion. 9. The mandrel of claim 8 , wherein a transition between the first outer diameter and the second outer diameter is a single step devoid of any second projections. 10. The mandrel of claim 8 , further comprising a sloped transition region between the first outer diameter and the second outer diameter, the sloped transition region having a plurality of the second projections disposed thereon. 11. A mandrel for braiding a stent, comprising: a cylindrical body having a distal end and a proximal end and an outer surface extending therebetween; a plurality of tabs disposed circumferentially around only the distal end of the cylindrical body; and a plurality of projections extending radially outward from the outer surface of the cylindrical body, the plurality of projections disposed proximally of the plurality of tabs and arranged in a continuous pattern extending to the proximal end of the cylindrical body, the plurality of projections defining a plurality of channels between adjacent projections. 12. The mandrel of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of projections each has a polygonal base. 13. The mandrel of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of projections are pyramid shaped. 14. The mandrel of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of projections have truncated or rounded tops. 15. The mandrel of claim 11 , wherein the cylindrical body includes a distal portion having a first outer diameter and a remainder of the cylindrical body has a second outer diameter smaller than the first outer diameter, wherein the plurality of tabs and some of the plurality of projections are disposed on the distal portion. 16. The mandrel of claim 15 , wherein a transition between the first outer diameter and the second outer diameter is a single step devoid of any projections. 17. The mandrel of claim 15 , further comprising a sloped transition region between the first outer diameter and the second outer diameter, the sloped transition region having at least some of the plurality of projections disposed thereon. 18. A mandrel for braiding a stent, comprising: a body having a distal end and a proximal end and an outer surface extending therebetween; a plurality of first projections disposed at the distal end of the body; and a plurality of second projections extending radially outward from the outer surface of the body, the plurality of second projections disposed proximally of the plurality of first projections, the plurality of second projections each having a shape different from a shape of the plurality of first projections, wherein the plurality of second projections are arranged in a continuous pattern defining a plurality of channels between adjacent second projections, wherein the plurality of channels extend helically around the body at an angle from about 5 degrees to about 85 degrees from a longitudinal axis of the body. 19. The mandrel of claim 18 , wherein the plurality of second projections each has a polygonal base.
