Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A fluid handling cassette, such as that useable with an automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) cycler device or other infusion apparatus, may include a generally planar body having at least one pump chamber formed as a depression in a first side of the body and a plurality of flowpaths for a fluid that includes a channel. A patient line port may be arranged for connection to a patient line and be in fluid communication with the at least one pump chamber via at least a first one of said flowpaths, and an optional membrane may be attached to the first side of the body over the at least one pump chamber. In one embodiment, the membrane may have a pump chamber portion with an unstressed shape that generally conforms to the depression of the at least one pump chamber in the body and is arranged to be movable for movement of the fluid in a useable space of the at least one pump chamber. One or more spacers may be provided in the at least one pump chamber to prevent the membrane from contacting an inner wall of the at least one pump chamber. The patient line, a drain line, and/or a heater bag line may be positioned to be separately occludable in relation to one or more solution lines that are connectable to the cassette.

The invention claimed is: 1. A fluid handling cassette for use with a fluid handling system of a medical infusion device, the cassette comprising: a generally planar body having at least one pump chamber formed as a depression in a first side of the body and first and second common channels, the at least one pump chamber having a first valved port and a second valved port, the first valved port being directly connected to the first common channel and the second valved port being directly connected to the second common channel; a membrane attached to the body and overlying the at least one pump chamber; a patient line port arranged for connection to a patient line, the patient line port having a corresponding patient valve that is directly connected to the first common channel; a drain line port arranged for connection to a drain line, the drain line port having a corresponding drain valve that is directly connected to the second common channel; a heater bag port arranged for connection to a heater bag line, the heater bag port having a corresponding heater bag valve that is directly connected to the second common channel; and a plurality of solution line ports each having a corresponding solution line valve that is directly connected to the first common channel. 2. The cassette of claim 1 , wherein the first common channel extends from the first valved port to the patient valve and to the solution line valves and includes no valve to control flow between the first valved port and the patient valve and between the first valved port and the solution line valves, and the second common channel extends from the second valved port to the drain valve and to the heater bag valve and includes no valve to control flow between the second valved port and the drain valve and between the second valved port and the heater bag valve. 3. The cassette of claim 1 , wherein the body includes a vacuum vent clearance depression formed adjacent the at least one pump chamber. 4. The cassette of claim 3 , wherein the vacuum vent clearance depression extends outwardly from the at least one pump chamber. 5. The fluid handling cassette of claim 1 , wherein the first and second valved ports each include a valve well with a valve seat, wherein a portion of the membrane positioned over the valve well is configured to close a respective valved port of the first and second valved ports by sealing engagement with the valve seat. 6. The fluid handling cassette of claim 1 , further comprising a heater bag connected to the heater bag port, the heater bag configured to be heated to at least 37 degrees C. 7. The fluid handling cassette of claim 1 , wherein the first valved port comprises a valve well chamber with a valve seat and an opening, wherein the opening is fluidly connected to the first common channel. 8. The fluid handling cassette of claim 1 , wherein the second valved port comprises a valve well chamber with a valve seat and an opening, wherein the opening is fluidly connected to the second common channel. 9. The fluid handling cassette of claim 1 , wherein the patient line port is connected to the patient line for delivery of a dialysate to a peritoneal cavity of a patient and withdrawal of the dialysate from the patient. 10. The fluid handling cassette of claim 1 , wherein the solution line ports are each fluidly connected to a spike, each spike having an associated solution line. 11. The fluid handling cassette of claim 1 , wherein the solution line ports are located on a first end of the generally planar body and the patient line port is located on a second end of the generally planar body. 12. The fluid handling cassette of claim 1 , wherein the solution line ports are located on a first end of the generally planar body and the drain line port is located on a second end of the generally planar body. 13. The fluid handling cassette of claim 1 , wherein the solution line ports are located on a first end of the generally planar body and the heater bag port is located on a second end of the generally planar body. 14. A fluid handling cassette for use in a fluid handling system of a medical infusion device, the cassette comprising: a generally planar body having at least one pump chamber formed as a depression in a first side of the body, the at least one pump chamber having a first valved port and a second valved port, the generally planar body comprising a first common channel connecting a plurality of valved solution ports and a valved patient port to the first valved port of the at least one pump chamber, and comprising a second common channel connecting a valved heater bag port and a valved drain port to the second valved port of the at least one pump chamber; and a membrane attached to the body and overlying the at least one pump chamber. 15. The fluid handling cassette of claim 14 , wherein the at least one pump chamber includes two pump chambers formed as two depressions in the first side of the body, each of the two pump chambers having a first valved port and a second valved port, the first common channel connecting the plurality of valved solution ports and the valved patient port to the first valved ports of the two pump chambers, and the second common channel connecting the valved heater bag port and the valved drain port to the second valved ports of the two pump chambers. 16. The fluid handling cassette of claim 15 , wherein the first and second valved ports each include a valve well with a valve seat, wherein a portion of the membrane positioned over the valve well closes a respective valved port of the first and second valved ports by sealing engagement with the valve seat. 17.
