Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An improved bolt and bolt carrier with integral gas key having an extension nozzle threadedly secured and pinned to the gas key for use with a direct gas operated firearm is provided. The extension nozzle is designed to receive a portion of the host firearm's gas operating system. The firing pin retaining pin is oriented so as to expose its widest profile to the firing pin's annular flange, increasing its service life. The bolt has a plurality of lugs extending from its forward end. The extractor recess is constructed so that the face of the bolt is round and the adjacent lugs fully supported. The extractor engages approximately 17% more of a seated ammunition cartridge's rim as compared to the prior art AR15/M16 extractor. The result is an improved bolt and bolt carrier which provides for increased operational reliability.

What is claimed is: 1. A bolt carrier for an automatic rifle comprising: an elongated cylindrical body comprising a forward end, a rearward end, a top side, a bottom side, lateral sides, and an internal bore extending from said forward end to said rearward end along a longitudinal axis of said elongated cylindrical body; wherein said internal bore is configured to receive a bolt and a firing pin; a gas key integrally formed on said top side; an extension nozzle comprising an open front end configured to receive a gas tube; a means for securing said extension nozzle and said gas key together providing said open front end externally to said gas key; a retaining pin comprising a head portion and a tail portion; and an opening provided on one of said lateral sides perpendicular to said internal bore, wherein said opening is configured to receive said retaining pin, host said tail portion within said internal bore, and retain said firing pin within said bolt carrier. 2. The bolt carrier of claim 1 , wherein said gas key comprises a gas key indexing notch, a gas key port throughbore extending from a top exterior surface of said gas key to said internal bore, and two gas key openings, wherein said gas key openings are provided in a same spatial location on opposite lateral sides of said gas key and are configured to receive a roll pin therebetween. 3. The bolt carrier of claim 2 , wherein said extension nozzle comprises an extension nozzle indexing notch, an extension nozzle port, and two extension nozzle openings, wherein said extension nozzle openings are provided in a same spatial location on opposite lateral sides of said extension nozzle and are configured to receive said roll pin therebetween. 4. The bolt carrier of claim 3 , wherein when said gas key and said extension nozzle are secured together and said gas key indexing notch and said extension nozzle indexing notch align: (a) said gas key port and said extension nozzle port align providing communication between said extension nozzle and said internal bore, and (b) said gas key openings and said extension nozzle openings align providing said roll pin to be received through said gas key openings and said extension nozzle openings. 5. The bolt carrier of claim 4 , wherein said gas key port is angled along its length. 6. The bolt carrier of claim 4 , wherein said gas key has a threaded opening about its forward side and said extension nozzle has a threaded portion about its rearward end that is sized to be threadedly received by said threaded opening. 7. The bolt carrier of claim 4 , wherein said extension nozzle has a rearward end that is constructed to be secured within said gas key through a press fit. 8. The bolt carrier of claim 1 , wherein said internal bore comprises a forward end longitudinal bore configured to receive said bolt, and said forward end longitudinal bore comprises two sections of varied diameter, wherein a first section of said forward end longitudinal bore is larger in diameter than a second section of said forward end longitudinal bore, wherein said first section is configured to accommodate a rearward portion of said bolt, and said second section is configured to accommodate a rear end of said bolt. 9. The bolt carrier of claim 1 , wherein said bolt carrier further comprises: a hammer clearance slot, wherein said hammer clearance slot permits a hammer to extend in said bolt carrier and strike said firing pin; a charging handle contact point on said top side and immediately adjacent to said forward end; and a cam slot located rearwardly of said charging handle contact point; wherein said cam slot is configured to receive a cam pin, said cam pin being configured to retain said retain said bolt within said bolt carrier, and wherein said cam slot provides a contained area that allows said cam pin to rotate, thereby allowing said bolt to move rearward and rotate axially within said bolt carrier. 10. The bolt carrier of claim 1 , wherein said opening is constructed to orient said retaining pin to expose a largest cross section of said tail portion toward an annular flange of said firing pin. 11. A bolt carrier for an automatic rifle comprising: an elongated cylindrical body comprising a forward end, a rearward end, a top side, a bottom side, lateral sides, and an internal bore extending from said forward end to said rearward end along a longitudinal axis of said elongated cylindrical body; wherein said internal bore is configured to receive a bolt and a firing pin; a gas key integrally formed on said top side; an extension nozzle comprising an open front end configured to receive a gas tube; a means for securing said extension nozzle and said gas key together providing said open front end externally to said gas key; and an opening provided on one of said lateral sides perpendicular to said internal bore, wherein said opening is configured to receive a retaining pin, host a tail portion of said retaining pin within said internal bore, and retain said firing pin within said bolt carrier. 12. The bolt carrier of claim 11 , wherein said gas key comprises a gas key indexing notch, a gas key port throughbore extending from a top exterior surface of said gas key to said internal bore, and two gas key openings, wherein said gas key openings are provided in a same spatial location on opposite lateral sides of said gas key and are configured to receive a roll pin therebetween. 13. The bolt carrier of claim 12 , wherein said extension nozzle comprises an extension nozzle indexing notch, an extension nozzle port, and two extension nozzle openings, wherein said extension nozzle openings are provided in a same spatial location on opposite lateral sides of said extension nozzle and are configured to receive said roll pin therebetween. 14. The bolt carrier of claim 13 , wherein when said gas key and said extension nozzle are secured together and said gas key indexing notch and said extension nozzle indexing notch align: (a) said gas key port and said extension nozzle port align providing communication between said extension nozzle and said internal bore, and (b) said gas key openings and said extension nozzle openings align providing said roll pin to be received through said gas key openings and said extension nozzle openings. 15. The bolt carrier of claim 14 , wherein said gas key port is angled along its length. 16. The bolt carrier of claim 14 , wherein said gas key has a threaded opening about its forward side and said extension nozzle has a threaded portion about its rearward end that is sized to be threadedly received by said threaded opening. 17. The bolt carrier of claim 14 , wherein said extension nozzle has a rearward end that is constructed to be secured within said gas key through a press fit. 18.
