Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Embodiments are directed to controlling an electronically-controlled appliance using a software application and providing a user interface for controlling an electronically-controlled appliance. In one scenario, a computer system receives an indication from a remote computing system indicating that an electronically-controlled appliance is communicably connected to the remote computing system. The computer system provides a notification in the software application indicating that the electronically-controlled appliance is available to receive instructions, and receives a user input at the software application indicating that certain functions are to be performed by the electronically-controlled appliance. The computer system further generates instructions configured to control the electronically-controlled appliance based on the functions specified in the received user input, and sends the generated instructions to the electronically-controlled appliance to perform the specified functions. These functions are then interpreted and carried out on the electronically-controlled appliance via the hardware controller.

What is claimed is: 1. An outdoor cooking appliance, comprising: a hopper; a combustion area, wherein the hopper is configured to provide combustible solid fuel to the combustion area; and at least one controller comprising: at least one processor; and at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions thereon that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the outdoor cooking appliance to: receive configuration information from a remote device to establish network communication with one or more remote computing systems; establish network communication with the one or more remote computing systems; receive one or more communications from the one or more remote computing systems, the one or more communications containing control information originating from the remote device; responsive to receiving the one or more communications, adjust at least one cooking characteristic of the outdoor cooking appliance based at least in part on the control information; monitor usage of the outdoor cooking appliance; and transmit usage data representative of the monitored usage to the one or more remote computing systems. 2. The outdoor cooking appliance of claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one controller of the outdoor cooking appliance to, in response to receiving one or more communications to perform a custom cooking cycle from the one or more remote computing systems, initiate the custom cooking cycle. 3. The outdoor cooking appliance of claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one controller of the outdoor cooking appliance to: in response to receiving one or more communications to perform a user-selected recipe from the one or more remote computing systems, initiate a cooking cycle associated with the user-selected recipe; and adjust an amount of wood solid fuel to be delivered to the combustion area of the outdoor cooking appliance to initiate the cooking cycle associated with the user-selected recipe. 4. The outdoor cooking appliance of claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one controller of the outdoor cooking appliance to further adjust an amount of solid fuel to be delivered to the combustion area of the outdoor cooking appliance based on one or more of a time interval identified in a user-selected recipe or temperature data received from a temperature probe of the outdoor cooking appliance. 5. The outdoor cooking appliance of claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the outdoor cooking appliance to communicate directly with the one or more remote computing systems via an access point within range of the outdoor cooking appliance. 6. A cloud computing system for communicating with and controlling operation of an outdoor cooking appliance comprising a hopper configured to provide combustible solid fuel into a combustion area of the outdoor cooking appliance, the cloud computing system comprising: at least one processor; and at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions thereon that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the cloud computing system to: establish a network communication with the outdoor cooking appliance after the outdoor cooking appliance has been authorized to communicate with the cloud computing system; receive, from a remote device, one or more communications containing control information for controlling an operation of the outdoor cooking appliance; responsive to receiving the one or more communications, determine a location of the remote device relative to the outdoor cooking appliance; responsive to determining that the location of the remote device is within a certain distance of the outdoor cooking appliance, enable the control information to be transmitted to the outdoor cooking appliance; and responsive to determining that the location of the remote device is outside of the certain distance of the outdoor cooking appliance, either prevent the control information from being transmitted to the outdoor cooking appliance or modify the control information prior to transmitting the control information to the outdoor cooking appliance; and transmit the control information to the outdoor cooking appliance. 7. The cloud computing system of claim 6 , wherein the received control information relates to igniting the outdoor cooking appliance. 8. The cloud computing system of claim 6 , wherein determining a location of the remote device relative to the outdoor cooking appliance comprises determining the location of the remote device based on a determined global positioning system (GPS) location of the remote device. 9. The cloud computing system of claim 6 , wherein determining a location of the remote device relative to the outdoor cooking appliance comprises determining the location of the remote device based on a BLUETOOTH® geo-fence. 10. The cloud computing system of claim 6 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the cloud computing system to receive usage data from the outdoor cooking appliance. 11. The cloud computing system of claim 10 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the cloud computing system to: analyze the usage data received from the outdoor cooking appliance; and generate one or more outdoor cooking appliance-related analytics for the outdoor cooking appliance. 12. The cloud computing system of claim 6 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the cloud computing system to transmit the control information to the outdoor cooking appliance to cause additional solid fuel to be provided into the combustion area. 13. The cloud computing system of claim 6 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the cloud computing system to perform remote diagnostics on the outdoor cooking appliance. 14. The cloud computing system of claim 6 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the cloud computing system to predict problems for one or more components of the outdoor cooking appliance. 15. A method for controlling an outdoor cooking appliance using a software application on a remote device, the outdoor cooking appliance comprising at least one hardware controller and a hopper for providing combustible solid fuel into a combustion area of the outdoor cooking appliance, the method comprising: providing, via the remote device, configuration information for the outdoor cooking appliance to establish network communication with one or more remote computing systems; transmitting a communication to the outdoor cooking appliance, the communication containing the configuration information for the outdoor cooking appliance to establish network communication with the one or more remote computing systems; determining a plurality of locations of the remote device relative to the outdoor cooking appliance; in response to determining that the remote device is within a certain distance of the outdoor cooking appliance based on a current location of the plurality of locations, directly transmitting one or more instructions to the outdoor cooking appliance from a cloud computing system; and in response to determining that the remote device is outside of the certain distance of the outdoor
