Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A battery plate assembly for a lead-acid battery is disclosed. The assembly includes a plates of opposing polarity each formed by an electrically conductive grid body having opposed top and bottom frame elements and opposed first and second side frame elements, the top frame element having a lug and an opposing enlarged conductive section extending toward the bottom frame element; a plurality of interconnecting electrically conductive grid elements defining a grid pattern defining a plurality of open areas, the grid elements including a plurality of radially extending vertical grid wire elements connected to the top frame element, and a plurality of horizontally extending grid wire elements, the grid body having an active material provided thereon. A highly absorbent separator is wrapped around at least a portion of the plate of a first polarity and extends to opposing plate faces. An electrolyte is provided, wherein substantially all of the electrolyte is absorbed by the separator or active material. A method for assembling a battery is also disclosed.

What is claimed is: 1. A battery plate assembly for a lead-acid battery comprising: a first stamped plate formed by an electrically conductive grid body having opposed top and bottom frame elements and opposed first and second side frame elements, provided about a plurality of interconnecting electrically conductive grid elements defining a grid pattern having a plurality of open areas, the grid elements including a plurality of radially extending vertical grid wire elements originating from the top frame element, and a plurality of horizontally extending grid wire elements extending between the opposed first and second side frame elements, and the top frame element having a first lug; a highly absorbent separator on opposing plate faces of the first stamped plate, with the separator comprising a porous mat and having a thickness between 0.01 mm to 2.0 mm; an electrolyte, wherein the electrolyte is absorbed by the separator or active material; and a second stamped plate opposite the first stamped plate, with lugs of the first stamped plate and the second stamped plate in alignment and a height of the first stamped plate being different from a height of the second stamped plate. 2. The battery plate assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first stamped plate and the second stamped plate is a positive plate. 3. The battery plate assembly of claim 1 , wherein the separator is an absorbent glass mat. 4. The battery plate assembly of claim 1 , wherein the separator is wrapped around a bottom frame element of the first stamped plate such that the separator extends upwardly along the opposing plate faces toward the first lug. 5. The battery plate assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first stamped plate and the second stamped plate is comprised of lead. 6. A battery comprising the battery plate assembly of claim 1 . 7. The battery plate assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of horizontally extending grid wire elements extending between the side frame elements comprises: a first plurality of horizontally extending grid wire elements parallel to at least one of the top frame elements and the bottom frame elements; and a second plurality of horizontally extending grid wire elements nonparallel to either the top frame elements or the bottom frame elements. 8. The battery plate assembly of claim 1 , wherein the separator comprises glass fibers. 9. A battery plate assembly for a lead-acid battery comprising: a stamped plate of a first polarity formed by an electrically conductive grid body having opposed top and bottom frame elements and opposed first and second side frame elements, provided about a plurality of interconnecting electrically conductive grid elements defining a grid pattern, the grid pattern having a plurality of open areas formed by a plurality of radially extending vertical grid wire elements coupled to the top frame element, and a plurality of horizontally extending grid wire elements extending between the opposed first and second side frame elements, the top frame element having a first lug; a stamped plate of a second polarity opposite the first polarity formed by an electrically conductive grid body having opposed top and bottom frame elements and opposed first and second side frame elements, the frame elements provided about a plurality of interconnecting electrically conductive grid elements defining a grid pattern, the grid pattern having a plurality of open areas formed by a plurality of radially extending vertical grid wire elements coupled to the top frame element, and a plurality of horizontally extending grid wire elements extending between the side frame elements, the top frame element having a second lug in alignment with the first lug; a plurality of highly absorbent glass mat separators with each separator comprising a porous mat, each highly absorbent glass mat separator of the plurality of highly absorbent separators interleaved between one or more adjacent stamped plates in a plurality of stamped plates, at least one of the plurality of highly absorbent glass mat separators having a thickness between 0.01 mm and 2 mm; and a height of the stamped plate of the first polarity being different from a height of the stamped plate of the second polarity. 10. A battery comprising the battery plate assembly of claim 9 . 11. The battery plate assembly of claim 9 , wherein the stamped plate of the first polarity is comprised of lead. 12. The battery plate assembly of claim 1 , wherein the separator is compressible and substantially conforms to a contour of a surface of at least one of the first stamped plate and the second stamped plate. 13. The battery plate assembly of claim 1 , wherein the separator has sufficient porosity and retention to contain substantially all of the electrolyte necessary to support electrochemical reactions. 14. The battery plate assembly of claim 9 , wherein the separator is compressible and substantially conforms to a contour of a surface of at least one of the stamped plate of the first polarity and the stamped plate of the second polarity. 15. The battery plate assembly of claim 9 , wherein the separator has sufficient porosity and retention to contain substantially all of an electrolyte necessary to support electrochemical reactions.
