Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods and apparatus to communicate via a weld cable are disclosed. An example welding accessory includes a first port to receive input power via a first weld cable, a power converter to convert the input power to output power, a second port to output the input power via a second weld cable, and one or more output switches to selectively divert the input power from the power converter to the second port.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

What is claimed is: 1. A welding system, comprising: a welding power supply configured to output welding power via first and second cables; a first welding accessory configured to: monitor the welding power received via the first and second cables, output the welding power as pass-through welding power via third and fourth cables when first and second switching devices of the first welding accessory are in a pass-through configuration, and consume the welding power when the first and second switching devices are in a second configuration; and a second welding accessory configured to receive the pass-through welding power from the first welding accessory via the third and fourth cables when the first welding accessory selectively directs the pass-through welding power to the second welding accessory via the first and second switching devices. 2. The welding system of claim 1 , further comprising a temperature sensor configured to: measure a temperature information of a workpiece; and transmit the temperature information to the second welding accessory. 3. The welding system of claim 1 , further comprising a weld cable transceiver to send or receive communications via at least one of the first cable or the second cable. 4. The welding system of claim 3 , wherein the communications include destination information identifying corresponding destinations of the communications. 5. The welding system of claim 1 , wherein the first welding accessory comprises a current monitoring device for measuring a current of the welding power and a voltage monitoring device for measuring a voltage of the welding power. 6. The welding system of claim 5 , wherein one or both of the measured current or measured voltage is stored in one or both of a memory device or a storage device. 7. The welding system of claim 1 , wherein the first welding accessory comprises a controller configured to control the one or more switching devices to control flow of the welding power to the second welding accessory. 8. The welding system of claim 7 , wherein the controller is configured to control the flow of the welding power in response to a temperature measured by a temperature sensor. 9. The welding system of claim 8 , wherein the controller is configured to communicate with the temperature sensor by one or both of wired communication or wireless communication. 10. The welding system of claim 1 , wherein two or more of the welding power supply, the first welding accessory, and the second welding accessory are configured to communicate with each other by one or both of wired communication or wireless communication. 11. The welding system of claim 1 , further comprising a user interface configured to be used to enter information regarding welding of a workpiece. 12. The welding system of claim 1 , wherein the second welding accessory is a wire feeder. 13. A method, comprising: receiving welding power as an output of a welding power supply by a first welding accessory via first and second cables; monitoring the welding power received via the first and second cables by the first welding accessory; outputting the welding power as pass-through welding power via third and fourth cables when first and second switching devices of the first welding accessory are in a pass-through configuration; consuming the welding power, by the first welding accessory, when the first and second switching devices are in a second configuration; and selectively providing the pass-through welding power by the first welding accessory to a second welding accessory via third and fourth cables. 14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising using a weld cable transceiver to send or receive communications via at least one of the first cable or the second cable. 15. The method of claim 13 , wherein monitoring the welding power comprises measuring a current of the welding power and measuring a voltage of the welding power. 16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising controlling the one or more switching devices to control flow of the welding power to the second welding accessory. 17. The method of claim 16 , wherein controlling the one or more switching devices is in response to a temperature measured by a temperature sensor. 18. The method of claim 13 , comprising communicating by one of the welding power supply, the first welding accessory, or the second welding accessory to another of the welding power supply, the first welding accessory, or the second welding accessory using one or both of wired communication or wireless communication. 19. The method of claim 13 , further comprising entering a user interface to enter information regarding welding of a workpiece. 20. A welding system, comprising: a welding power supply configured to output welding power via first and second cables; a heater comprising a power converter and configured to: monitor the welding power received via the first and second cables, output the welding power as pass-through welding power via third and fourth cables when first and second switching devices of the heater are in a pass-through configuration, and consume the welding power when the first and second switching devices are in a second configuration; and a wire feeder configured to receive the pass-through welding power from the heater via the third and fourth cables when the heater selectively directs the welding power to the wire feeder via the first and second switching devices.
