Abstract

Program products, methods, and systems for providing location-aware fitness monitoring services are disclosed. In an embodiment of the present invention, a method of displaying a route traversed by an athlete equipped with a location-aware portable fitness monitoring device includes the steps of (a) receiving data describing a plurality of satellite navigational system waypoints that are acquired as the athlete engages in a fitness activity, (b) identifying a map area based on a location indicated by the data describing the plurality of satellite navigational system waypoints, (c) determining the route traversed by the athlete based on the data describing the plurality of satellite navigational system waypoints and based on the location of one or more known paths associated with the map area, and (d) displaying the route traversed by the athlete on top of the map area.

First claim

What is claimed is:

1. A method of motivating a person during an activity, the method comprising:
determining, by a portable electronic device, that a performance parameter of the person has exceeded a predetermined threshold;
sending, in response to determining that the performance parameter of the person has exceeded the predetermined threshold, an electronic notification that the person is participating in the activity from the portable electronic device of the person to a remote user;
receiving electronic motivational content on the portable electronic device of the person in response to sending the electronic notification, wherein the electronic motivational content comprises an electronic audio file, and wherein the portable electronic device includes a microprocessor, a display screen, a user interface, a satellite positioning system receiver, a memory, and a wireless communication transceiver; and
playing, in response to receiving the electronic motivational content, the electronic audio file to the person during the activity via the portable electronic device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sending the electronic notification is automatically initiated by the portable electronic device in response to the determining that the performance parameter of the person has exceeded the predetermined threshold.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronic notification comprises a map indicating the person's location.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the activity includes one or more of running, walking, cycling, hiking, climbing, skating, swimming, skiing, aerobic exercising, or weight lifting.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the performance parameter is determined by the portable electronic device of the person.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving input from the person on the portable electronic device to initiate sending the electronic notification.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronic notification comprises a message posted in an online community.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising detecting the performance parameter, and
wherein the determining that a performance parameter of the person has exceeded a predetermined threshold comprises comparing the detected performance parameter to a performance goal.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising displaying, on the portable electronic device, information related to a route previously traversed by the person, wherein the information comprises at least one of route information, performance information, or environmental information.

10. A method of motivating a person during an activity, the method comprising:
detecting, on a portable electronic device of the person, a performance parameter of the person;
determining whether the performance parameter of the person has exceeded a predetermined threshold by comparing the detected performance parameter to a performance goal;
sending a notification that the person is participating in the activity from the portable electronic device of the person, wherein the notification is sent automatically in response to the determining whether the performance parameter of the person has exceeded the predetermined threshold;
receiving an electronic video file on the portable electronic device of the person in response to sending the notification, wherein the portable electronic device includes:
a microprocessor,
a display screen,
a user interface,
satellite positioning system receiver,
a memory, and
a wireless communication transceiver; and

playing the electronic video file to the person during the activity via the portable electronic device.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein sending the notification occurs via an email message.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein sending the notification occurs via a text message.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the notification comprises an update to the person's status in an online community.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the notification comprises a display of a map indicating the person's location.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the notification comprises a display of performance information about the person.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the electronic video file is received via a mobile telephone network.

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein the electronic video file is a video message.

18. The method of claim 10 , wherein the electronic video file is stored in the memory of the portable electronic device.

19. The method of claim 10 , wherein the electronic video file includes an indication of the identity of an individual who sent the electronic video file.

20. The method of claim 10 , wherein the activity includes one or more of running, walking, cycling, hiking, climbing, skating, swimming, skiing, aerobic exercising, or weight lifting.

21. The method of claim 10 , wherein the performance goal comprises at least one of a target distance, a target duration, a target pace, or a target heart rate.

22. The method of claim 10 , comparing the detected performance parameter to a performance goal is done in real-time.

23. A method of motivating a person during an activity, the method comprising:
determining, by a portable electronic device, performance information, the performance information comprising pace and heart rate data;
sending, in response to determining the performance information, a notification that the person is participating in the activity from the portable electronic device of the person to a remote user;
after sending the notification, receiving electronic motivational content on the portable electronic device of the person in response to sending the electronic notification, wherein the electronic motivational content comprises an electronic audio file, wherein the portable electronic device includes a microprocessor, a display screen, a user interface, a satellite positioning system receiver, a memory, and a wireless communication transceiver; and
playing, in response to receiving the electronic audio or video file, the electronic audio or video file to the person via the portable electronic device during the activity.
