Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A cap for coupling to a medical adapter may include a housing with a closed top end and an open bottom end with legs that extend from the housing away from the bottom end. Members may extend from an inner surface of the legs to engage and secure the cap to a medical adapter or an insert configured to mate with a medical adapter. A cap may include angular ridges between a cap housing and an insert to permit rotation of the cap in single direction and prevent removal of the cap from a medical adapter. A cap may include hinged legs to permit the cap to be secured to a medical adapter by rotating the legs toward each other until a portion of a collar on each leg may be matingly joined around the medical adapter.

What is claimed is: 1. A tamper-resistant cap for a medical adapter, the cap comprising: a housing having a closed top end, an opposing open bottom end, a central axis extending between the top and bottom ends, and a sidewall extending between the top and bottom ends and disposed circumferentially about the central axis; a transition step disposed on an exterior surface of the sidewall between the top and bottom ends; and a first leg comprising a plurality of members extending radially from an inner surface of the first leg, and a second leg comprising a plurality of members extending radially from an inner surface of the second leg, each of the plurality of members of the first and second legs comprising a ramp surface, an engagement surface extending transversely to the ramp surface, and an apex area that transitions between the ramp surface and the engagement surface, the plurality of members of the first leg comprising a first member and a second member, and the plurality of members of the second leg comprising a third member and a fourth member, each of the first and second legs extending from the bottom end of the housing and spaced apart from each other to form first and second openings, wherein the first opening has a greater width than the second opening and is formed between the first member and the third member, and the second opening is formed between the second member and the fourth member. 2. The tamper-resistant cap of claim 1 , wherein an exterior surface of the housing has a first cross-sectional width at the bottom end and a second cross-sectional width at the top end different from the first cross-sectional width. 3. The tamper-resistant cap of claim 2 , wherein the first cross-sectional width is greater than the second cross-sectional width. 4. The tamper-resistant cap of claim 2 , further comprising a plurality of ribs disposed on the sidewall and extending from the bottom end to the top end. 5. The tamper-resistant cap of claim 4 , wherein the ribs extend over the transition step. 6. The tamper-resistant cap of claim 5 , wherein the ribs are tapered from the first cross-sectional width at the bottom end to the second cross-sectional width at the top end. 7. The tamper-resistant cap of claim 1 , wherein the first opening is formed between the first and second legs and the bottom end of the housing. 8. The tamper-resistant cap of claim 1 , wherein an exterior surface of the housing has a first cross-sectional width at the bottom end and a second cross-sectional width at the top end different from the first cross-sectional width. 9. The tamper-resistant cap of claim 8 , wherein the first cross-sectional width is greater than the second cross-sectional width. 10. The tamper-resistant cap of claim 8 , further comprising a plurality of ribs disposed on the sidewall and extending from the bottom end to the top end. 11. The tamper-resistant cap of claim 10 , wherein the ribs extend over the transition step. 12. The tamper-resistant cap of claim 11 , wherein the ribs are tapered from the first cross-sectional width at the bottom end to the second cross-sectional width at the top end. 13. A tamper-resistant cap for a medical adapter, the cap comprising: a housing having a closed top end, an opposing open bottom end, a central axis extending between the top and bottom ends, and a sidewall extending between the top and bottom ends and disposed circumferentially about the central axis, wherein the top end comprises a closed portion adjacent to the central axis, the closed portion configured to obstruct access to a medical adapter coupled to the tamper-resistant cap; a transition step disposed on an exterior surface of the sidewall between the top and bottom ends; and a first leg extending from the bottom end of the housing and comprising a first member and a second member; a second leg extending from the bottom end of the housing and comprising a third member and a fourth member; wherein, the first leg is spaced apart from the second leg to form a first opening having a first distance therebetween, and a second opening separate from the first opening and having a second distance therebetween, wherein first distance is greater than the second distance, a portion of the first opening is formed between the first member and the third member, and a portion of the second opening is formed between the second member and the fourth member. 14. The tamper-resistant cap of claim 13 , wherein the member comprising a ramp surface, an engagement surface extending transversely to the ramp surface, and an apex area that transitions between the ramp surface and the engagement surface.
