Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A directional lock or a headgear or interface assembly comprising one or more directional locks that include a catch arrangement for initiating or assisting in movement of a lock member of the direction lock. In some configurations, the catch arrangement assists movement of the lock member in only a portion of a range of travel of the lock member. In some configurations, the directional lock comprises a housing and a sleeve and the catch arrangement comprises a catch arm carried by the sleeve. The catch arm includes a catch end that contacts the lock member, which can be a lock washer in some configurations.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A directional lock, comprising: a housing defining an interior space, a first opening and a second opening, wherein each of the first and second openings communicates with the interior space; a brake defined by or supported by the housing; at least one lock disposed within the housing; a core that passes through both the first and second openings of the housing and engages the at least one lock such that movement of the core relative to the housing causes rotation of the at least one lock; wherein the at least one lock is movable relative to the housing between a first position, which provides a first level of resistance to rotation of the at least one lock, and a second position, which provides a second level of resistance to rotation of the at least one lock, wherein the second level of resistance is higher than the first level; and wherein the second level of resistance is caused at least in part by contact between the at least one lock and the brake. 2. The directional lock of claim 1 , wherein the first and second openings of the housing are aligned. 3. The directional lock of claim 1 , wherein the housing comprises a left side wall and a right side wall, wherein the right side wall is thicker than the left side wall, and wherein the first opening and the second opening extend through the left and right side walls respectively. 4. The directional lock of claim 2 , wherein the housing further comprises a Front wall, a back wall, a top wall, and a bottom wall, and wherein the top wall comprises a third opening that opens into the interior space of the housing. 5. The directional lock of claim 1 , wherein the at least one lock comprises a pinion and a shaft. 6. The directional lock of claim 5 , wherein the housing further comprises: a shaft aperture extending through openings in each of the front and back walls configured to receive and retain the shaft; and a brake aperture extending through openings in each of the front and back walls and which is configured to receive and retain the brake. 7. The directional lock of claim 5 , wherein the pinion comprises a centrally located gear including gear teeth, the centrally located gear being flanked on each side by a circular flange that has a larger diameter than an outer diameter of the gear teeth. 8. The directional lock of claim 5 , wherein the shaft is cylindrical and extends axially through the pinion and provides a rotational linkage between the pinion and the housing. 9. The directional lock of claim 7 , wherein the circular flanges are formed independently of the centrally located gear and shaft. 10. The directional lock of claim 7 , wherein the core is elongate and comprises a plurality of teeth along one side that are configured to mesh with the gear teeth of the gear. 11. The directional lock of claim 5 , wherein the core has a first end proximal to the brake and a second end proximal to the pinion, and wherein the first end is configured to be integrally formed with or permanently joined to another component, and the second end is configured to remain unattached. 12. The directional lock of claim 11 , wherein the first end of the core is integrally formed or permanently joined with a headgear strap, and wherein the housing is fixed to a mask frame or mask component. 13. The directional lock of claim 7 , wherein the brake is substantially rectangular in cross-section but includes one side wall that is concave, the concave side wall having a diameter that substantially matches the outer diameter of the flanges of the pinion. 14. The directional lock of claim 6 , wherein the shaft aperture is stadium shaped with a height that is approximately the same as the diameter of the shaft and a length that is longer than a diameter of the shaft, such that the shaft is configured to slide along the length of the shaft aperture. 15. The directional lock of claim 1 , further comprising a biasing means that is configured to bias movement of the core relative to the housing. 16. The directional lock of claim 15 , wherein the biasing means comprises an elastic strap. 17. The directional lock of claim 15 , wherein the biasing means is configured to bias movement of the core such that a first end of the core is moved toward the brake. 18. The directional lock of claim 1 , wherein the brake is made of a soft and compressible material. 19. The directional lock of claim 18 , wherein the soft and compressible material comprises an elastomeric plastic or rubber.
