Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Embodiments of systems and methods as disclosed may provide a platform agnostic way to edit content within an enterprise. For example, a platform independent thin client editor may be provided such that this editor can be accessed by users at a variety of computing platforms across the distributed computer network of an enterprise, regardless of the platform from which the thin client editor is being accessed. Moreover, certain embodiments may provide a role based mechanism for controlling the editing of content. Embodiments of such a role based mechanism may allow one editor of a content item to designate a role associated with the content item so that only users associated with that role may be allowed to edit the content item or portion of the content item.

What is claimed is: 1. A content editing system for providing hierarchical content editing, comprising: a content management system managing a set of templates, including a template adapted for use in generating a page from the template, the page including first content associated with an editing rule, the editing rule designated by a first user that interacted with the template and wherein the editing rule associated with the template specifies a user characteristic and associated editing capability for the first content; a non-transitory computer readable medium, comprising instructions for an editor, the editor for executing on a computing device of a second user to allow the second user to edit the template by: obtaining the first page generated from the template; obtaining a descriptor file for the generated first page, the descriptor file including the editing rule associated with the first content; evaluating the page descriptor file to determine the first content of the first page is associated with the editing rule; determining whether the second user meets the user characteristic specified by the editing rule associated with the template; generating an indicator based on the determination of whether the second user meets the editing rule, wherein a portion of the indicator corresponding to an area of the generated first page associated with the first content is adapted to present an indication that the second user is allowed the associated editing capability with respect to the first content when it is determined the second user meets the user characteristic specified by the editing rule and wherein the editor is adapted to handle user interactions associated with the editing capability with respect to the first content; rendering the generated first page and the generated indicator in the interface of the editor at the computing device of the second user; determining an edit to the first content in the presented generated first page; and based on the editing of the first content, causing the edited first content to be stored and the template at the content management system to be altered to reference the stored edited first content. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein determining whether the second user meets the user characteristic specified by the editing rule comprises sending a request with an identifier of the second user from the editor at the computing device to a user management system to determine if the second user meets the user characteristic. 3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the indicator is a visual indication. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein rendering the indictor comprise presenting the indicator when the second user interacts with the area of the generated first page associated with the first content. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the editor is browser based. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first page is generated remotely from the computing device in response to a communication from the editor at the computing device. 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the editor is further adapted for obtaining a regenerated first page generated from the template in response to the editing of the first content and rendering the regenerated first page and the generated indicator in the interface of the editor at the computing device of the second user. 8. A non-transitory computer readable medium, comprising instructions for providing hierarchical content editing, comprising instructions for: obtaining a first page generated from a template, the template stored at a content management system managing a set of templates, including the template, wherein the template is adapted for use in generating a page from the template, the page including first content associated with an editing rule, the editing rule designated by a first user that interacted with the template and wherein the editing rule associated with the template specifies a user characteristic and associated editing capability for the first content; obtaining a descriptor file for the generated first page, the descriptor file including the editing rule associated with the first content; evaluating the page descriptor file to determine the first content of the first page is associated with the editing rule; determining whether the second user meets the user characteristic specified by the editing rule associated with the template; generating an indicator based on the determination of whether the second user meets the editing rule, wherein a portion of the indicator corresponding to an area of the generated first page associated with the first content is adapted to present an indication that the second user is allowed the associated editing capability with respect to the first content when it is determined the second user meets the user characteristic specified by the editing rule and wherein the editor is adapted to handle user interactions associated with the editing capability with respect to the first content; rendering the generated first page and the generated indicator in the interface of the editor at a computing device of the second user; determining an edit to the first content in the presented generated first page; and based on the editing of the first content, causing the edited first content to be stored and the template at the content management system to be altered to reference the stored edited first content. 9. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 8 , wherein determining whether the second user meets the user characteristic specified by the editing rule comprises sending a request with an identifier of the second user from the editor at the computing device to a user management system to determine if the second user meets the user characteristic. 10. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the indicator is a visual indication. 11. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 8 , wherein rendering the indictor comprise presenting the indicator when the second user interacts with the area of the generated first page associated with the first content. 12. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the editor is browser based. 13. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the first page is generated remotely from the computing device in response to a communication from the editor at the computing device. 14. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the editor is further adapted for obtaining a regenerated first page generated from the template in response to the editing of the first content and rendering the regenerated first page and the generated indicator in the interface of the editor at the computing device of the second user. 15. A method for providing hierarchical content editing, comprising: obtaining a first page generated from a template, the template stored at a content management system managing a set of templates, including the template, wherein the template is adapted for use in generating a page from the template, the page including first content associated with an editing rule, the editing rule designated by a first user that interacted with the template and wherein the editing rule associated with the template specifies a user characteristic and associated editing capability for the first content; obtaining a descriptor file for the generated first page, the descriptor file including the editing rule associated with the first content; evaluating the page descriptor file to determine the first content of the first page is associated with the editing rule; determining whether
