Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An agricultural implement system having: a row unit coupled to a tool bar of an agricultural implement; an opener system coupled to a chassis of the row unit and configured to engage soil to form a trench; a downforce system configured to apply a downforce to the row unit to adjust a contact force between the row unit and the soil; a soil condition sensor configured to detect a condition of the soil and/or an operational sensor configured to detect operation of the agricultural implement system; a closing system, configured to close the trench created by the opener system; and a controller coupled to the soil condition sensor and/or the operational sensor, wherein the controller is configured to control the downforce system and the closing system in response to feedback from the soil condition sensor and/or the operational sensor.

The invention claimed is: 1. An agricultural implement system, comprising: a row unit coupled to a tool bar of an agricultural implement; an opener system coupled to a chassis of the row unit and configured to open a seed trench in a soil surface as the row unit travels in a forward direction of travel; a downforce system configured to adjust a downforce applied by the opener system to the soil surface; a seed delivery mechanism disposed rearward of the opener system and configured to deposit seed into the open seed trench as the row unit travels in the forward direction of travel; a closing system disposed rearward of the seed delivery mechanism and configured to move soil into the open seed trench and over the deposited seed as the row unit travels in the forward direction of travel; a trench closing sensor disposed in the seed trench rearward of the seed delivery mechanism and extending toward the closing system, the trench closing sensor configured to generate a signal indicative of a force against the trench closing sensor applied by the soil moved into the seed trench by the closing system; and a controller in signal communication with the trench closing sensor, wherein the controller is configured to control a closing wheel actuator to adjust a position of the closing system in response to the generated signal from the trench closing sensor. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the opener system includes an opener disc and a gauge wheel, the gauge wheel configured to rotate over the soil surface to limit a depth of penetration of the opener disc into the soil surface when opening the seed trench. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the downforce system includes a downforce actuator and a downforce sensor, wherein the controller is configured to control the downforce actuator to vary a the downforce applied by the gauge wheel against the soil surface in response to signals from the downforce sensor. 4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the downforce actuator comprises an electric actuator, hydraulic actuator, pneumatic actuator, or a combination thereof. 5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising: a packer wheel assembly comprising a packer wheel configured to rotate across the soil surface rearward of the closing system to pack the soil over the deposited seed in the closed seed trench, a packer wheel actuator extending between the chassis of the row unit and the packer wheel assembly, wherein the packer wheel actuator is configured to vary a downforce applied by the packer wheel against the soil surface, and wherein the controller is configured to control the packer wheel actuator in response to the generated signals from the trench closing sensor. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the closing system comprises, a first closing wheel configured to move the soil on a first side of the open seed trench into the open seed trench and a second closing wheel configured to move the soil on a second side of the open seed trench into the open seed trench and wherein the controller is configured to control a position of the first and second closing wheels in response to the generated signals from the trench closing sensor. 7. The system of claim 6 , further comprising a closing wheel camber actuator configured to change a camber angle of the first and second closing wheels relative to the seed trench. 8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the first and second closing wheels are disposed in a V shape arrangement to move the soil into the open seed trench and compact the soil around the deposited seed. 9. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a work layer sensor configured to generate a work layer image representative of characteristics of an area of interest that includes the closed seed trench. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the characteristics of the area of interest include any one of: a depth of the seed trench, a shape of the seed trench, a depth of the deposited seed in the closed seed trench, a depth of the deposited seed relative to a depth of the seed trench, crop residue in the closed seed trench, void spaces within the closed seed trench, a density of the soil in the seed trench, a density of the soil adjacent to the seed trench, seed-to-soil contact, a percentage of closure of the closed seed trench, a percentage of upper half closure of the closed seed trench, a percentage of lower half closure of the seed trench, and moisture of the soil. 11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the work layer image is generated by an generating an electromagnetic field through the area of interest. 12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the work layer sensor consists of any one of: a ground penetration radar system, an ultrasound system, an audible range sound system, an electrical current system. 13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the work layer sensor is disposed rearward of the closing system or rearward of a packer wheel assembly disposed rearward of the closing system. 14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the work layer image is displayed to an operator. 15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the controller is responsive to the generated work layer image to control any one of: the downforce actuator, a rocker arm actuator to control a depth of penetration of the opener system, the closing wheel actuator, a closing wheel camber actuator, a packer wheel actuator and a row cleaner actuator.
