An electronics-enabled eyewear device provides a primary command channel and a secondary command channel for receiving user input during untethered wear, one of the command channels providing for tap input detected by motion sensor(s) incorporated in a body of the eyewear device. A predefined tap sequence or pattern can be applied to frame of the device to trigger as device function. In one example, a double tap of the device's frame causes charge level display indicating a battery charge level.

What is claimed is: 1. An eyewear device comprising: an eyewear frame; onboard electronics incorporated in the eyewear frame, the onboard electronics including a camera directed forwards from the frame; an onboard battery powering the onboard electronics; an external camera mode indicator comprising a series of light emitters mounted on a forwards-facing surface of the eyewear frame and configured to emit light forwards from the frame, so that the camera and the external camera mode indicator are directed in substantially a common direction forwards away from the frame; and a controller incorporated in the eyewear frame in communication with the external camera mode indicator, the controller being configured to perform operations comprising: responsive to detecting an image capture operation using the camera, automatically causing the external camera mode indicator to produce, synchronously with the image capture operation, a visual indication configured for ready visibility by nearby persons within range of the camera, thus to provide an image capture alert; and responsive to receiving user input indicating a charge display command, causing display, via the external camera mode indicator, of a visual charge level indication with respect to the onboard battery. 2. The eyewear device of claim 1 , wherein the charge level indication comprises illumination of a particular proportion of the series of light emitters indicative of a current charge level of the onboard battery. 3. The eyewear device of claim 2 , wherein the series of light emitters of the external camera mode indicator are arranged in a ring-shaped configuration. 4. The eyewear device of claim 3 , wherein the series of light emitters are arranged peripherally about a camera lens opening defined by the eyewear frame. 5. The eyewear device of claim 1 , wherein the controller and external camera mode indicator are configured to, at different times, display different respective visual indications corresponding to at least two different image capture modes. 6. The eyewear device of claim 5 , wherein the visual indication corresponding to at least one image capture mode of the camera comprises displaying an animation pattern. 7. The eyewear device of claim 6 , wherein the series of light emitters are arranged in a ring-shaped configuration, the animation pattern comprising circulating illumination of the light emitters in series. 8. The eyewear device of claim 1 , further comprising a tap input control channel configured to enable user-provision of at least one control command by application of a predefined sequence of taps to the eyewear frame. 9. The eyewear device of claim 8 , wherein the at least one control command receivable via the tap input control channel does not include any command triggerable by receipt of a single tap event. 10. The eyewear device of claim 8 , wherein the tap input control channel provides for recognition and execution of no more than a single control command. 11. The eyewear device of claim 10 , wherein the single control command available via the tap control channel is limited exclusively to a double-tap command. 12. The eyewear device of claim 11 , wherein the double-tap command is a toggle command that serves to switch a specific device function between two different modes. 13. The eyewear device of claim 12 , wherein the toggle command serves to toggle the visual charge level indication by the external camera mode indicator between an on mode and an off mode, the charge display command thus being provided via double-tap input. 14. A method comprising: using one or more computer processing devices incorporated in an eyewear device, detecting an image capture operation using a camera mounted on an eyewear frame such as to be directed forwards from the eyewear frame; during the image capture operation, automatically displaying a visual indication configured to alert nearby persons within view range of the camera of active image capture via the eyewear device, the visual indication being displayed by an external camera mode indicator comprising a series of light emitters mounted on a forwards-facing surface of the eyewear frame and configured to emit light forwards from the frame; and responsive to receiving user input indicating a charge display command, causing display, via the external camera mode indicator, of a visual charge level indication with respect to an onboard battery incorporated in the eyewear device. 15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the charge level indication comprises illumination of a particular proportion of the series of light emitters indicative of a current charge level of the onboard battery. 16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the series of light emitters of the external camera mode indicator are arranged in a ring-shaped configuration peripherally about a camera lens opening defined by the eyewear frame. 17. The method of claim 14 , further comprising, at different times displaying different respective visual indications corresponding to at least two different image capture modes, the respective visual indication corresponding to at least one image capture mode of the camera comprises displaying an animation pattern.
