A connector system for medical fluid includes a male connector and a female connector that have a closed configuration when detached from one another. The first end of the male connector is configured to mate with a first end of the female connector. When the male connector is coupled with the female connector, complementary structures engage to move seals away from ports in the male connector and the female connector, opening a fluid pathway through the connectors. The mating ends of the connectors are not exposed to the medical fluid when the connectors are coupled so that when the connectors are disconnected, the mating ends are substantially free of residual medical fluid.

The following is claimed: 1. A medical connector system comprising: a first medical connector comprising: a first region comprising a first luer-compatible connection portion being configured to engage a separate first luer connector; a second region comprising a resilient seal and a first luer-incompatible connection portion, the first luer-incompatible connection portion being configured to inhibit engagement with a separate luer connector; and a first engagement structure; and a second medical connector comprising: a first region comprising a second connection portion being configured to engage a separate medical device; a second region comprising a second luer-incompatible connection portion, the second luer-incompatible connection portion being configured to engage the first luer-incompatible connection portion of the first medical connector to establish fluid communication between the first medical connector and the second medical connector; a compressible seal being moveable between a closed configuration and an opened configuration, the compressible seal being configured to sealingly contact the resilient seal of the first medical connector when the first medical connector removably connects to the second medical connector; and a second engagement structure being configured to engage the first engagement structure to removably connect the first medical connector with the second medical connector; wherein the first region of the first medical connector does not rotate with respect to the second region of the first medical connector in an initial stage of use; and wherein the first medical connector is configured to transition from the initial stage of use to a subsequent stage of use in which the first region of the first medical connector and the second region of the first medical connector can be rotated with respect to each other. 2. The medical connector system of claim 1 , wherein the first medical connector and the second medical connector are configured to be removably connected together by moving the first medical connector and the second medical connector toward each other in a substantially linear motion without requiring rotation. 3. The medical connector system of claim 2 , wherein the medical connector system produces an audible click when the first medical connector engages the second medical connector. 4. The medical connector system of claim 1 , wherein one of the first engagement structure and the second engagement structure comprises a movable hook being configured to engage another of the first engagement structure or the second engagement structure. 5. The medical connector system of claim 1 , wherein a proximal end of the second luer-incompatible connection portion is exposed to a region outside of the second medical connector when the first medical connector and the second medical connector are disengaged. 6. The medical connector system of claim 1 , wherein the first medical connector and the second medical connector can rotate with respect to each other while engaged. 7. The medical connector system of claim 1 , wherein a shroud of the first medical connector comprises a continuous circular band at a distal end of the first medical connector. 8. The medical connector system of claim 7 , wherein a distal end of the first luer-incompatible connection portion of the first medical connector is recessed proximally from a distal end of the shroud of the first medical connector. 9. The medical connector system of claim 1 , wherein a proximal end of the compressible seal of the second medical connector is generally flush with a proximal end of the second medical connector in the closed configuration. 10. The medical connector system of claim 1 , wherein the transition from the initial stage to the subsequent stage is configured to occur when the first region is twisted with respect to the second region. 11. The medical connector system of claim 2 , wherein after the transition, the second region is configured to rotate freely with respect to the first region without separating from the first region. 12. A medical connector system comprising: a first medical connector comprising: a first region comprising a first luer-compatible connection portion being configured to engage a separate first luer connector; a second region comprising a first luer-incompatible connection portion, the first luer-incompatible connection portion being configured to inhibit engagement with a separate luer connector; a valve member being moveable within the first luer-incompatible connection portion, the valve member comprising a first mating surface; and a first engagement structure; and a second medical connector comprising: a first region comprising a second connection portion being configured to engage a separate medical device; a second region comprising a second luer-incompatible connection portion, the second luer-incompatible connection portion being configured to engage the first luer-incompatible connection portion of the first medical connector to establish fluid communication between the first medical connector and the second medical connector, the second luer-incompatible connection portion comprising a second mating surface being configured to engage the first mating surface of the valve member to inhibit fluid penetration between the first mating surface and the second mating surface when the first medical connector is engaged and in fluid communication with the second medical connector; and a second engagement structure being configured to engage the first engagement structure to removably connect the first medical connector with the second medical connector; wherein the first region of the first medical connector does not rotate with respect to the second region of the first medical connector in an initial stage of use; and wherein the first medical connector is configured to transition from the initial stage of use to a subsequent stage of use in which the first region of the first medical connector and the second region of the first medical connector can be rotated with respect to each other. 13. The medical connector system of claim 12 , wherein the first medical connector and the second medical connector are configured to be removably connected together by moving the first medical connector and the second medical connector toward each other in a substantially linear motion without requiring rotation. 14. The medical connector system of claim 12 , wherein the medical connector system produces an audible click when the first medical connector engages the second medical connector. 15. The medical connector system of claim 12 , wherein one of the first engagement structure and the second engagement structure comprises a movable hook being configured to engage another of the first engagement structure or the second engagement structure. 16. The medical connector system of claim 12 , wherein a proximal end of the second luer-incompatible connection portion is exposed to a region outside of the second medical connector when the first medical connector and the second medical connector are disengaged. 17. The medical connector system of claim 12 , wherein the first medical connector and the second medical connector can rotate with respect to each other while engaged. 18. The medical connector system of claim 12 , wherein a shroud of the first medical connector comprises a continuous circular band at a distal end of the first medical connector. 19. The medical connector system of claim 18 , wherein a distal end
