Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Powered retractable vehicle step assist systems and methods are provided. The steps systems are configured for installation (e.g., after market installation) and use with a vehicle. The system can include a stepping member movable between a retracted position and a deployed position with respect to the vehicle. The system can further include a vehicle interface. A controller of the step system can be configured to process information received from the vehicle interface and, based at least partly on the processing of the information, cause movement of the stepping member between the retracted position and the deployed position.

What is claimed is: 1. A powered vehicle step assist system, comprising: a step configured for attachment to a vehicle and comprising a stepping deck, the stepping deck movable between a retracted position in which the stepping deck is stowed under the vehicle and a deployed position in which the stepping deck is outboard of the retracted position with respect to the vehicle; a motor drivably coupled to the step and capable of effectuating movement of the stepping deck from the retracted position to the deployed position; a controller in electronic communication with the motor, wherein the controller is configured to cause the motor to effectuate movement of the stepping deck in response to door status information generated by an existing vehicle computer system of the vehicle, the door status information comprising one or more of door opened/closed status and door locked/unlocked status; and a user input device positioned on the stepping deck and configured to be actuatable by a user to cause the motor to effectuate movement of the stepping deck. 2. The powered vehicle step assist system of claim 1 , wherein the deployed position is downward and outboard of the retracted position with respect to the vehicle. 3. The powered vehicle step assist system of claim 2 , further comprising at least one support member connectable with respect to an underside of the vehicle and connected to the step, the support member configured to at least partially support the step beneath one or more doors of the vehicle, the support member configured to pivot about at least a first axis oriented parallel to the ground. 4. The powered vehicle step assist system of claim 3 , wherein the support member comprises at least a first support arm and a support bracket, the first support arm connectable with respect to the underside of the vehicle so as to be pivotable about at least the first axis, the support bracket rigidly connected to the step and connected to the first support arm to be pivotable about at least a second axis oriented parallel to the ground. 5. The powered vehicle step assist system of claim 1 , wherein the stepping deck has a converging planar cross-sectional geometry. 6. The powered vehicle step assist system of claim 1 , wherein the user input device comprises a switch or button. 7. The powered vehicle step assist system of claim 1 , wherein actuation of the user input device by the user causes the motor to effectuate movement of the stepping deck regardless of a vehicle door state. 8. A method of controlling a powered vehicle step assist system installed on a vehicle, the method comprising: with a controller of the step assist system, in response to door status information generated by an existing vehicle computer system of the vehicle and comprising one or more of door opened/closed status and door locked/unlocked status, commanding a motor drivably coupled to a step of the powered vehicle step assist system to effectuate movement of a stepping deck of the step from a retracted position to a deployed position, wherein the stepping deck is stowed under the vehicle in the retracted position and is outboard of the retracted position with respect to the vehicle in the deployed position; and in response to actuation of a user input device positioned on the stepping deck, causing the motor to effectuate movement of the stepping deck. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the deployed position is downward and outboard of the retracted position with respect to the vehicle. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the powered step assist system further comprises at least one support member connectable with respect to an underside of the vehicle and connected to the step, the support member configured to at least partially support the step beneath one or more doors of the vehicle, the support member configured to pivot about at least a first axis oriented parallel to the ground. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the support member comprises at least a first support arm and a support bracket, the first support arm connectable with respect to the underside of the vehicle so as to be pivotable about at least the first axis, the support bracket rigidly connected to the step and connected to the first support arm to be pivotable about at least a second axis oriented parallel to the ground. 12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the stepping deck has a converging planar cross-sectional geometry. 13. The method of claim 8 wherein the user input device comprises a switch or button. 14. The method of claim 8 , wherein actuation of the user input device by the user causes the motor to effectuate movement of the stepping deck regardless of a vehicle door state.
