Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A medical imaging system includes a movable station and a gantry. The movable station includes a gantry mount rotatably attached to the gantry. The gantry includes an outer C-arm slidably mounted to and operable to slide relative to the gantry mount, an inner C-arm slidably coupled to the outer C-arm and, an imaging signal transmitter and sensor attached to the C-arms. The two C-arms work together to provide a full 360 degree rotation of the imaging signal transmitter.

What is claimed is: 1. A medical imaging system comprising: a movable station coupled to a gantry through a gantry mount, the gantry comprising a first c-arm and a second c-arm that are moveable along an arc relative to the gantry mount; a detector panel attached to a first end of the second c-arm; an imaging signal transmitter attached to a second end of the second c-arm; and a motor assembly capable of telescopingly rotating the first c-arm relative to the gantry and capable of rotating the second c-arm relative to the first c-arm, wherein the imaging signal transmitter and the detector panel in a first mode support fluoroscopy imaging by transmitting x-rays and detecting the transmitted x-rays on the detector panel, wherein the imaging signal transmitter and the detector panel in a second mode support 2D radiography by transmitting and detecting x-rays to view an internal structure of a non-uniformly composed and opaque object, wherein the imaging signal transmitter and the detector panel in a third mode support cone beam computed tomography scanning by transmitting and detecting divergent x-rays forming a cone, wherein at least one navigation marker is positioned on the gantry mount, the at least one navigation marker allowing for automatic or semi-automatic positioning of the gantry, and wherein a navigation system is adapted to automatically register images acquired by the medical imaging system based on the at least one navigation marker placed on the gantry mount. 2. The medical imaging system of claim 1 , wherein the first c-arm and the second c-arm are telescopingly coupled. 3. The medical imaging system of claim 1 , wherein the movable station and the gantry enable the medical imaging system to achieve six degrees of freedom. 4. The medical imaging system of claim 1 , wherein the Movable station includes omni-directions wheels. 5. The medical imaging system of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to move in any X-Y direction with Wag rotation about any Z-axis. 6. The medical imaging system of claim 1 , wherein the first c-arm and the second c-arm are movable to provide a full 360 degrees rotation of the imaging signal transmitter. 7. The medical imaging system of claim 4 , wherein the movable station includes an imaging controller system that controls the movement of the omni-directional wheels, the gantry mount, and the gantry to position the imaging signal transmitter in relation to a patient. 8. A medical imaging system comprising: a movable station coupled to a gantry through a gantry mount, the gantry comprising a first c-arm and a second c-arm that are moveable along an arc relative to the gantry mount; a detector panel attached to a first end of the second c-arm; an imaging signal transmitter attached to a second end of the second c-arm, and a motor assembly capable of telescopingly rotating the first c-arm relative to the gantry and capable of rotating the second c-arm relative to the first c-arm, wherein the imaging signal transmitter and the detector panel in a first mode support fluoroscopy imaging by transmitting x-rays and detecting the transmitted x-rays on the detector panel, wherein the imaging signal transmitter and the detector panel in a second mode support cone beam computed tomography scanning by transmitting and detecting divergent x-rays forming a cone, wherein at least one optical navigation marker is positioned on the gantry mount, the at least one navigation marker allowing for automatic or semi-automatic positioning of the gantry, wherein each of the first and second C-arms is adapted to rotate 180 degrees such that the first and second C-arms together provide a 360 degree rotation of the imaging signal transmitter, and wherein a navigation system is adapted to automatically register images acquired by the medical imaging system based on the at least one navigation marker placed on the gantry mount. 9. The medical imaging system of claim 8 , wherein the first c-arm and the Second c-arm are telescopingly coupled. 10. The medical imaging system of claim 8 , wherein the movable station and the gantry are configured to enable the medical imaging system to achieve six degrees of freedom. 11. The medical imaging system of claim 8 , wherein the movable station includes omni-directions wheels. 12. The medical imaging system of claim 9 , wherein the System is configured to move in any X-Y direction with Wag rotation about any Z-axis. 13. The medical imaging system of claim 11 , wherein the movable station includes an imaging controller system that controls the movement of the omni-directional wheels, the gantry mount, and the gantry to position the imaging signal transmitter in relation to the patient. 14. A medical imaging system comprising: a movable station coupled to a gantry through a gantry mount, the gantry comprising a first c-arm and a second c-arm that are moveable along an arc relative to the gantry mount, the first C-arm having side frames each having an inner side and an outer side, the second C-arm having side frames each having an inner side and an outer side; a detector panel attached to a first end of the second c-arm; an imaging signal transmitter attached to a second end of the second c-arm; a motor assembly capable of telescopingly rotating the first c-arm relative to the gantry and capable of rotating the second c-arm relative to the first c-arm; and wherein the imaging signal transmitter and the detector panel in a first mode support fluoroscopy imaging by transmitting x-rays and detecting the transmitted x-rays on the detector panel, wherein the imaging signal transmitter and the detector panel in a second mode support 2D radiography by transmitting and detecting x-rays to view an internal structure of a non-uniformly composed and opaque object, wherein the imaging signal transmitter and the detector panel in a third mode support cone beam computed tomography scanning by transmitting and detecting divergent x-rays forming a cone, wherein in a fourth setting a combination of the first mode and the third mode are configured to be performed during a medical procedure, and wherein at least one navigation marker is positioned on the gantry mount, the at least one navigation marker allowing for automatic or semi-automatic positioning of the gantry, wherein a plurality of uniformly spaced rollers are mounted on the inner sides of the side frames of the first C-arm and wherein the second C-arm includes a pair of guide rails on the outer sides of the side frames of the second C-arm, wherein the plurality of rollers are coupled to the pair of guide rails, wherein the plurality of rollers and the pair of guide rails are configured to allow the second C-arm to telescopically slide along the first C-arm, wherein each of the first and second C-arms is adapted to rotate 180 degrees such that the first and second C-arms together provide a 360 degree rotation of the imaging signal transmitter, and wherein a navigation system is adapted to automatically register images acquired by the medical imaging system based on the at least one navigation marker placed on the gantry mount.
