A receptacle cap includes a probe recess configured to receive a probe inserted therein to thereby frictionally secure the receptacle cap to the probe, and a closed lower end of the receptacle is insertable into an open end of a reaction receptacle to close the reaction receptacle. The receptacle cap and the reaction receptacle include interlocking features for securing the receptacle cap to the reaction receptacle.

The invention claimed is: 1. A combination comprising: a reaction receptacle having an open end and a locking detent projecting radially inwardly; and a receptacle cap securable to the reaction receptacle, wherein the receptacle cap comprises: a closed distal end including a convex end surface, wherein the closed distal end is configured to be inserted into the open end of the reaction receptacle; an upper portion having a probe recess with an open end, wherein the probe recess is configured to receive a probe of a pipettor inserted through the open end to removably secure the receptacle cap to the probe; and a locking ridge projecting radially outwardly, wherein the locking detent of the reaction receptacle is configured to engage the locking ridge of the receptacle cap when the closed distal end of the receptacle cap is inserted into the open end of the reaction receptacle to secure the receptacle cap to the reaction receptacle. 2. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the closed distal end has a peripheral chamfer. 3. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the receptacle cap further comprises an annular collar projecting radially outwardly and disposed above the locking ridge. 4. The combination of claim 3 , wherein the annular collar bears against a top edge of the reaction receptacle when the closed distal end of the receptacle cap is inserted into the open end of the reaction receptacle. 5. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the locking detent of the reaction receptacle comprises diametrically opposed tabs extending radially inwardly from a peripheral wall surrounding the open end. 6. The combination of claim 5 , further comprising a through hole extending through the peripheral wall below each tab. 7. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the receptacle cap further includes a raised seal ring extending about the periphery of a lower portion of the receptacle cap. 8. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the receptacle cap further includes a pair of spaced-apart, raised seal rings extending about the periphery of a lower portion of the receptacle cap. 9. The combination of claim 7 , wherein the raised seal ring has an outer diameter that is larger than an inner diameter of the open end of the reaction receptacle. 10. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the reaction receptacle and the receptacle cap are each comprised of a material that is at least partially resilient. 11. The combination of claim 10 , wherein the reaction receptacle and the receptacle cap each consist of a plastic. 12. The combination of claim 1 , further comprising a rim surrounding the open end of the probe recess. 13. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the reaction receptacle is conical in shape. 14. The combination of claim 1 , wherein a lower portion of the receptacle cap defines a plug that fits into the open end of the reaction receptacle with an interference fit between an outer surface of the plug and an inner surface of the reaction receptacle. 15. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the receptacle cap further comprises an annular collar projecting radially outwardly and disposed between the upper portion and a lower portion of the receptacle cap. 16. The combination of claim 3 , wherein the locking detent of the reaction receptacle comprises diametrically opposed tabs extending radially inwardly from a peripheral wall surrounding the open end and configured to snap into a space between the annular collar and the locking ridge of the receptacle cap when the closed distal end of the receptacle cap is inserted into the open end of the reaction receptacle to secure the receptacle cap to the reaction receptacle.
