A surgical stapler includes a body portion and a tool assembly. The body portion includes a large diameter portion and a small diameter portion extending distally from the large diameter portion. The large diameter portion supports larger internal components of the device including a lockout assembly adapted to prevent refiring of the stapler to allow the diameter of the small diameter portion of the device to be minimized to facilitate passage of the small diameter portion of the stapler and the tool assembly through an 8 mm trocar.

What is claimed is: 1. A stapler reload for a surgical stapler, the stapler reload comprising: an elongate body having proximal and distal portions and defining a longitudinal axis, the proximal and distal portions each having a cross-sectional area, the cross-sectional area of the proximal portion being greater than the cross-sectional area of the distal portion; a tool assembly pivotally secured to the distal portion of the elongate body; a drive assembly extending between the elongate body and the tool assembly; a locking sleeve received about the proximal portion of the elongate body, the locking sleeve in engagement with the drive assembly and rotatable about the longitudinal axis from a first rotational position to a second rotational position; a locking plate supported on the elongate body, the locking plate movable from a first longitudinal position to a second longitudinal position and engageable with the locking sleeve; and a shipping lock releasably secured to the proximal portion of the elongate body, the shipping lock including a locking pin engaged with the drive assembly to prevent longitudinal movement of the drive assembly, the locking plate engaged with the locking pin in the first longitudinal position to prevent separation of the shipping lock from the elongate body, wherein movement of the locking sleeve from the first rotational position to the second rotational position moves the locking plate from the first longitudinal position to the second longitudinal position. 2. The stapler reload according to claim 1 , wherein the locking plate is disengaged from the locking pin when the locking plate is in the second longitudinal position to permit release of the shipping lock from the elongate body. 3. The stapler reload according to claim 1 , wherein the tool assembly includes an anvil assembly and a cartridge assembly, the cartridge assembly supporting a plurality of staples, and the drive assembly being movable through the elongate body and the tool assembly to eject staples from the cartridge assembly. 4. The stapler reload according to claim 1 , wherein the drive assembly includes a drive member, the locking pin being received through the drive member when the shipping lock is secured to the elongate body to prevent longitudinal movement of the drive member. 5. The stapler reload according to claim 1 , wherein the locking plate engages the locking pin prior to the stapler reload being secured to the surgical stapler. 6. The stapler reload according to claim 5 , wherein the locking plate is configured to disengage from the locking pin when the stapler reload is fully engaged with the surgical stapler. 7. The stapler reload according to claim 1 , wherein the locking sleeve rotates about the longitudinal axis from the first rotational position to the second rotational position in response to the stapler reload being fully engaged with the surgical stapler. 8. The stapler reload according to claim 1 , wherein the shipping lock includes curved arms configured to frictionally engage the elongate body of the stapler reload. 9. A stapler reload for a surgical stapler, the stapler reload comprising: an elongate body having proximal and distal portions and defining a longitudinal axis, the proximal and distal portions each having a cross-sectional area, the cross-sectional area of the proximal portion being greater than the cross-sectional area of the distal portion; a locking sleeve positioned about the proximal portion of the elongate body and rotatable from a first sleeve position to a second sleeve position, the locking sleeve positioned to engage the drive assembly in the first sleeve position to retain the drive assembly in a retracted position; a tool assembly pivotally secured to the distal portion of the elongate body; a drive assembly extending between the elongate body and the tool assembly; a shipping lock releasably secured to the proximal portion of the elongate body, the shipping lock including a locking pin movable into engagement with the drive assembly to prevent longitudinal movement of the drive assembly; and a lock plate movable from a first plate position engaged with the locking pin of the shipping lock and a second plate position disengaged from the locking pin, wherein the lock plate prevents removal of the shipping lock from the elongate body when the lock plate is in the first plate position, wherein rotation of the locking sleeve from the first sleeve position to the second sleeve position moves the lock plate from the first plate position to the second plate position. 10. The stapler reload of claim 9 , wherein the locking pin of the shipping lock has a notched portion, and the lock plate defines a notched slot that receives the lock pin. 11. The stapler reload of claim 10 , wherein the notched slot of the lock plate has a large diameter portion and a small diameter portion, the lock pin received within the small diameter portion of the notched slot when the lock plate is in the first plate position and received in the large diameter portion of the notched slot when the lock plate is in the second plate position. 12. The stapler reload of claim 9 , wherein the locking sleeve includes a flange that is positioned to engage the lock plate as the locking sleeve moves from the first sleeve position to the second sleeve position to move the lock plate from the first plate position to the second plate position. 13. A stapler reload for a surgical stapler, the stapler reload comprising: an elongate body having proximal and distal portions and defining a longitudinal axis, the proximal and distal portions each having a cross-sectional area, the cross-sectional area of the proximal portion being greater than the cross-sectional area of the distal portion; a tool assembly pivotally secured to the distal portion of the elongate body; a drive assembly extending between the elongate body and the tool assembly; a shipping lock releasably secured to the proximal portion of the elongate body, the shipping lock including a locking pin movable into engagement with the drive assembly to prevent longitudinal movement of the drive assembly; a lock plate movable from a first plate position engaged with the locking pin of the shipping lock to a second plate position disengaged from the locking pin, wherein the lock plate prevents removal of the shipping lock from the elongate body when the lock plate is in the first plate position; and a locking sleeve rotatably positioned about the proximal portion of the elongate body from a first sleeve position to a second sleeve position, the locking sleeve positioned to engage and move the lock plate from the first plate position to the second plate position as the locking sleeve is rotated from the first sleeve position to the second sleeve position.
