Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Apparatuses, systems, and methods for brewing a desired portion of a beverage, such as a single-cup portion of coffee, are provided. The system can include one or more hopper assemblies configured to provide a controlled dose of beverage material to a brew chamber. The system can also include a water input system configured to wet the ground beverage material as the grinds enter the brew chamber and substantially prevent steam from reaching grinder components of the system. Further, the system can include an automatic cleaning mechanism such that a user does not need to manually clean components of a brewing machine between brew cycles.

What is claimed is: 1. A beverage apparatus for providing a single serving of coffee, the beverage machine comprising: a plurality of hopper assemblies positioned at an upper portion of the beverage apparatus, the plurality of hopper assemblies including a first hopper assembly comprising: a hopper comprising a body portion defining an interior volume configured to receive coffee beans, the interior volume accessible to refill the hopper; an outlet; a visor configured to prevent the coffee beans from inadvertently falling through the outlet, the visor being a separate component from the body portion; and an auger comprising an inner core and a projection at least partially surrounding the inner core, wherein the auger is positioned below the visor; a single grinder assembly positioned below the plurality of hopper assemblies, the single grinder assembly configured to grind the coffee beans received from any of the plurality of hopper assemblies; and a brew chamber for receiving ground coffee beans from the single grinder assembly. 2. The beverage apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the auger is disposed at least partially within the interior volume of the hopper. 3. The beverage apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the projection comprises a screw thread. 4. The beverage apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the screw thread has a substantially uniform outer diameter. 5. The beverage apparatus of claim 3 , wherein a first portion of the screw thread has a different thickness than a second portion of the screw thread. 6. The beverage apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the first portion of the screw thread is thicker than the second portion of the screw thread, the second portion positioned rearward of the first portion. 7. The beverage apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the auger is disposed between the visor and the outlet. 8. The beverage apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the hopper comprises a door configured to provide access to the interior volume. 9. The beverage apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the interior volume of the hopper is accessible from an upper portion of the hopper. 10. The beverage apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a hopper motor configured to turn the auger. 11. The beverage apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising an auger coupling to couple the auger to the hopper motor. 12. The beverage apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the auger comprises a front end and a rear end, the motor coupled to the rear end of the auger. 13. The beverage apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising an auger retainer configured to secure a front end of the auger to the body portion. 14. The beverage apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the body portion comprises an upper body portion and a lower body portion separate from the upper body portion. 15. The beverage apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the outlet is in the lower body portion. 16. The beverage apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a hopper selector assembly, the hopper selector assembly having a plurality of paddles. 17. The beverage apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a beverage size control assembly configured to select a desired size of the single serving of coffee. 18. A beverage apparatus for providing a single serving of coffee, the beverage machine comprising: a plurality of hopper assemblies positioned at an upper portion of the beverage apparatus, the plurality of hopper assemblies including a first hopper assembly comprising: a hopper comprising a body portion defining an interior volume configured to receive coffee beans, the interior volume accessible to refill the hopper; an outlet; a visor configured to prevent the coffee beans from inadvertently falling through the outlet, the visor being a separate component from the body portion; and an auger comprising an inner core and a projection at least partially surrounding the inner, wherein the auger is disposed between the visor and the outlet; a single grinder assembly positioned below the plurality of hopper assemblies, the single grinder assembly configured to grind the coffee beans received from any of the plurality of hopper assemblies; and a brew chamber for receiving ground coffee beans from the single grinder assembly. 19. The beverage apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the auger is disposed at least partially within the interior volume of the hopper. 20. The beverage apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the projection comprises a screw thread. 21. The beverage apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the screw thread has a substantially uniform outer diameter. 22. The beverage apparatus of claim 20 , wherein a first portion of the screw thread has a different thickness than a second portion of the screw thread.
