Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system and method for simultaneously and continuously capturing video from the interior and exterior of a vehicle. The system includes, for example, a first housing including a first connection mechanism, first and second cameras and a memory disposed in the first housing. The system also includes a second housing including a second connection mechanism adapted to be removably connected to the first connection mechanism of the first housing and encasing said first housing within the second housing. A mounting mechanism is adjustably connected to said second housing and configured to maintain at least one of the first camera and the second camera in a predetermined position by adjusting the second housing. Additional embodiments are also described including a method for capturing data.

What is claimed is: 1 . A method for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle while recording vehicle data, comprising: determining first data associated with a first view from the vehicle; determining second data associated with a second view from the vehicle and providing a video of at least one of: a driver or passenger of the vehicle to enable review of events including distractions to the driver; transmitting the first and second data to at least one memory; determining third data including at least one of: vehicle acceleration, vehicle speed, direction of travel or location of the vehicle during the determining of at least one of: the first data or the second data; and determining distractions to the driver using at least one of: the first data or the second data, and the at least one of: the vehicle acceleration, the vehicle speed, the direction of travel, or the location of the vehicle to enable review of events including distractions to the driver. 2 . A method for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle according to claim 1 , further comprising using an accelerometer to enable measurement of at least one of: the vehicle stopped, the vehicle decelerating, the vehicle accelerating, a frontal collision, a rear collision, a vehicle left turn or a vehicle right turn. 3 . A method for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle according to claim 1 , further comprising using an accelerometer to enable measurement of the following: the vehicle stopped, the vehicle decelerating, the vehicle accelerating, a frontal collision, a rear collision, a vehicle left turn and a vehicle right turn. 4 . A method for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle according to claim 1 , further comprising determining the occurrence of a predetermined event, including at least one of: a braking event, a predetermined vehicle operation or a collision used in determining the driver distraction, and storing additional data associated with the predetermined event. 5 . A method for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle according to claim 1 , further comprising determining the occurrence of a predetermined event including at least one of: the vehicle decelerating faster than a predetermined rate, the vehicle accelerating faster than a predetermined rate, a collision or a trigger provided to the driver to initiate capture of protected video. 6 . A method for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle according to claim 1 , further comprising determining the occurrence of a predetermined event including: the vehicle decelerating faster than a predetermined rate, the vehicle accelerating faster than a predetermined rate, a collision and a trigger provided to the driver to initiate capture of protected video. 7 . A method for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle according to claim 1 , further comprising upon the occurrence of a predetermined event, protecting at least a portion of first and second data to enable a reviewer to view the interior and exterior of the vehicle for a portion of time leading to, during or after, the occurrence of the predetermined event. 8 . A method for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle according to claim 1 , further comprising storing continuously, by at least one memory, the first and second data captured from each of a first camera and a second camera. 9 . A method for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle according to claim 8 , further comprising a continuous loop recording, wherein an oldest captured video is overwritten with a newest captured video when the at least one memory is full. 10 . A method for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one of displaying and recording the first data comprising a video captured by a first camera in a continuous loop, the continuous loop recording over the oldest captured video with the newest captured video without recording over a protected portion. 11 . A method for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle according to claim 1 , further comprising a trigger, wherein upon activation of the trigger, recording in at least one of a protected memory area of at least one memory, a predetermined length of video from at least one camera. 12 . A method for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle according to claim 1 , further comprising configuring a first camera and a second camera in a housing. 13 . A method for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle while recording vehicle data, comprising: recording first data associated with a first view from the vehicle; recording second data associated with a second view from the vehicle and providing a video of at least one of: a driver or passenger of the vehicle to enable review of events including distractions to the driver; transmitting the first and second data to at least one memory; measuring data with at least one accelerometer, speed of the vehicle, direction of travel, and location of the vehicle during video capture; and determining distractions to the driver using at least one of: the first data or the second data, and the at least one of: the data measured by the accelerometer, the vehicle speed, the direction of travel, or the location of the vehicle to enable review of events including distractions to the driver. 14 . A method for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle according to claim 13 , further comprising storing continuously, by at least one memory, the first and second data captured from each of a first camera and a second camera. 15 . A method for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle according to claim 14 , further comprising a continuous loop recording, wherein an oldest captured video is overwritten with a newest captured video when the at least one memory is full. 16 . A method for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle according to claim 13 , further comprising a trigger, wherein upon activation of the trigger, recording in at least one of a protected memory area of at least one memory, a predetermined length of video from at least one camera. 17 . A method for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle according to claim 13 , further comprising configuring a first camera and a second camera in a housing. 18 . A system for determining driver distraction when operating a vehicle while recording vehicle data, comprising: a housing having a first camera and a second camera; a first data associated with a first view from the vehicle, the first data is recorded by the first camera; a second data associated with a second view from the vehicle, the second data is recorded by the second camera, at least one of: the first data or second data comprising a video of at least one of: a driver or passenger of the vehicle to enable review of events including distractions to the driver, the video is recorded in a continuous loop; at least one memory for receiving and storing at least one of: the first or the second data; and a plurality of sensors for measuring at least one of: a vehicle acceleration, a vehicle speed, a direction of travel, or a location of the vehicle, wherein distractions to the driver can be detected by using at least one of: the first data or the second data, and the at least one of: the vehicle acceleration, the vehicle speed, the direction of travel or the location of the vehicle to enab
