There is provided a client device arranged to receive a live adaptive bitrate stream, the client device further arranged to: request a manifest file; and request a manifest update hint. The client device further arranged to receive a manifest update hint, the manifest update hint including an indication of when the manifest will be updated; and request an updated manifest file at a time indicated by the manifest update hint.

What is claimed is: 1. An apparatus configured for receiving a live adaptive bitrate stream of adaptive bitrate segments, the apparatus comprising: a processor; and a memory containing instructions executable by the processor whereby the apparatus is operative: to request a manifest file associated with the live adaptive bitrate stream; to receive the requested manifest file; and responsive to a determination that the received manifest file has an associated update hint, wherein the associated update hint includes an indication of when the manifest file will be updated, to request an update to the manifest file. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the associated update hint is included in the received manifest file. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is operative to request the update to the manifest file according to the associated update hint. 4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the live adaptive bitrate stream contains live content. 5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is a client device. 6. An apparatus configured for delivering a live adaptive bitrate stream, the apparatus comprising: a processor; and a memory containing instructions executable by the processor whereby the apparatus is operative: to receive a video stream and to generate adaptive bitrate segments comprising the live adaptive bitrate stream for delivery to a requesting device; to generate a manifest file associated with the live adaptive bitrate stream; to generate an update hint indicative of when the manifest file will be updated and to associate the generated update hint with the manifest file; to send the manifest file in response to a request for a manifest file from the requesting device; and to enable access by the requesting device to the associated update hint. 7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the instructions cause the apparatus to enable access by the requesting device to the associated update hint by sending the associated update hint to the requesting device. 8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the instructions cause the apparatus to send the associated update hint to the requesting device responsive to receiving a request from the requesting device for access to the associated update hint. 9. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the instructions cause the apparatus to enable access by the requesting device to the associated update hint by including the associated update hint in the manifest file being sent to the requesting device. 10. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the instructions cause the apparatus to generate the update hint according to a determined length of a next adaptive bitrate segment. 11. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the apparatus is a server. 12. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the requesting device is a client device.
