Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An insulating container may include an opening, which can be sealed by a closure. The closure may have an upper portion with a handle that has a circular curvature equal to the cylindrical portion of the closure. The closure may also have a lower portion that is joined to the upper portion by an injection molded polymer element. The closure may also be in the form of “flip” type of closure such that the lid can be selectably opened or closed by the user by rotating a flip closure into either the opened or closed position. The closure may also be a two-part lid having a lower cap that may be configured to be removably-coupled to the container and an upper cap that may be configured to be removably-coupled to the lower cap.

What is claimed is: 1. A lid comprising: a body comprising a top wall being formed of a transparent or semi-transparent material, the top wall comprising a channel, the channel comprising an opening for accessing contents in a container and at least one port for venting, and the body further comprising a side wall configured to be placed into the container; a flip closure configured to rotate on the body from an opened position to a closed position, the flip closure rotating on the body on a pair of pins that extend from the channel, a pair of slots having a pair of gaskets therein and the gaskets receiving the pair of pins of the body, the flip closure comprising a knuckle defining a pivot, the knuckle extending entirely across the channel, the knuckle having a first end located on a first side of the channel and a second end located on a second side of the channel opposite the first side of the channel, the flip closure having a first section, a second section extending from the first section at an angle, and a third section extending at an angle to the second section, the flip closure comprising a stopper configured to be inserted into the opening for selectively sealing the opening, a protuberance configured to be inserted into the at least one port located in the channel, and an outwardly extending tab for grasping by the user to articulate the flip closure, wherein the knuckle, the slots, and the pins form a hinge for the flip closure to articulate between the closed position and the opened position; and a cam centrally located on the knuckle equidistant between the first end and the second end with a first space between the cam and the first end and a second space between the cam and the second end, wherein the cam is configured to align with a slot located on the channel to maintain the flip closure in the opened position during use; wherein the flip closure is formed of a first portion and a second portion and wherein the second portion is integrally formed with the first portion and the second portion includes the stopper and the protuberance; wherein at least a portion of the flip closure is configured to sit within the channel when the flip closure is in the closed position. 2. The lid of claim 1 wherein the flip closure is formed in a two-shot molding process. 3. The lid of claim 1 wherein the top wall is clear or semi-transparent such that a user can see the contents within the container. 4. The lid of claim 1 wherein the stopper forms a compression-type gasket together with the opening of the body to seal the opening of the body. 5. The lid of claim 1 wherein the protuberance is formed slightly larger than the port in the channel to form a compression-type gasket to seal the port of the channel. 6. The lid of claim 1 wherein the tab is located on a first end of the flip closure and the cam is located on a second end of the flip closure. 7. The lid of claim 1 wherein the flip closure comprises the cam, and the cam is configured to engage the channel to maintain the flip closure in the opened position during use. 8. The lid of claim 7 wherein the cam of the flip closure is located adjacent to the pivot. 9. The lid of claim 8 wherein the cam extends radially from the pivot. 10. The lid of claim 1 wherein the channel defines a volume wherein when the flip closure is in the closed position the flip closure fills a majority of the volume. 11. The lid of claim 1 wherein the tab extends radially past the body when the flip closure is in the closed position. 12. The lid of claim 1 wherein the pivot of the flip closure is eccentrically located on the body. 13. The lid of claim 1 wherein the body further comprises a rim and wherein the second section follows the sidewall and the third section follows the rim. 14. The lid of claim 1 wherein the protuberance is located closer to the pivot of the flip closure than the stopper. 15. The lid of claim 1 wherein the body further comprises a rim, the rim comprises a cutout portion and wherein the cutout portion is configured to receive the flip closure when the flip closure is in the opened position. 16. The lid of claim 15 wherein the channel extends from the opening to the cutout portion. 17. A container assembly comprising: a container comprising a first inner wall and a second outer wall and a sealed vacuum cavity forming an insulated structure between the first inner wall and the second inner wall; a lid comprising a body, the body comprising a top wall being formed of a transparent or semi-transparent material, the top wall comprising a channel, the channel comprising an opening for accessing contents in the container and at least one port for venting, and the body further comprising a rim and a side wall configured to be placed into the container, the lid further comprising a flip closure configured to rotate on the body from an opened position to a closed position, the flip closure rotating on the body on a pair of pins that extend from the channel, a pair of slots having a pair of gaskets therein and the gaskets receiving the pair of pins of the body, the flip closure comprising a knuckle defining a pivot, the knuckle extending entirely across the channel, the knuckle having a first end located on a first side of the channel and a second end located on a second side of the channel opposite the first side of the channel, the flip closure comprising a stopper configured to be inserted into the opening for selectively sealing the opening, a protuberance configured to be inserted into the at least one port located in the channel, and an outwardly extending tab for grasping by the user to articulate the flip closure, wherein the knuckle, the slots, and the pins form a hinge for the flip closure to articulate between the closed position and the opened position; and the lid further comprising a cam centrally located equidistant between the first end and the second end with a first space between the cam and the first end and a second space between the cam and the second end, wherein the cam is configured to align with a slot located on the channel to maintain the flip closure in the opened position; wherein the flip closure is formed of a first portion and a second portion and wherein the second portion is integrally formed with the first portion and the second portion includes the stopper and the protuberance wherein the flip closure includes a first portion and a second portion integrally formed with the first portion, and the second portion includes the stopper and the protuberance; wherein at least a portion of the flip closure is configured to sit within the channel when the flip closure is in the closed position; wherein the stopper forms a compression-type gasket together with the opening of the body to seal the opening of the body; wherein the protuberance is formed slightly larger than the port in the channel to form a compression-type gasket to seal the port of the channel; wherein the channel defines a volume wherein when the flip closure is in the closed position the flip closure fills a majority of the volume. 18. The container assembly of claim 17 wherein the flip closure comprises a first area and a second area and wherein the second area is more flexible than the first area. 19.
