Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Onboard EC window controllers are described. The controllers are configured in close proximity to the EC window, for example, within the IGU. The controller may be part of a window assembly, which includes an IGU having one or more EC panes, and thus does not have to be matched with the EC window, and installed, in the field. The window controllers described herein have a number of advantages because they are matched to the IGU containing one or more EC devices and their proximity to the EC panes of the window overcomes a number of problems associated with conventional controller configurations. Also described are self-meshing networks for electrochromic windows.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. An insulated glass unit (IGU) comprising: an electrochromic lite; an additional lite, wherein either (i) the electrochromic lite is an inboard lite and the additional lite is an outboard lite, or (ii) the electrochromic lite is the outboard lite and the additional lite is the inboard lite, wherein the inboard lite is configured to be positioned closer to an interior of a building in which the IGU is installed compared to the outboard lite, and wherein the inboard lite is oriented in a first plane and the outboard lite is oriented in a second plane substantially parallel to the first plane; a notch in the electrochromic lite and/or in the additional lite, the notch extending to an outer edge of the electrochromic lite or additional lite on which it is positioned; a sealing separator positioned between the electrochromic lite and the additional lite, wherein the sealing separator, the electrochromic lite, and the additional lite together define an interior region of the IGU that is sealed off from the ambient environment; and a window controller comprising logic configured to control the electrochromic lite, wherein: (i) the window controller is positioned at least partially between the first plane and the second plane, within the notch, (ii) the window controller is positioned outside of the interior region of the IGU such that the window controller is exposed to the ambient environment, and (iii) the window controller does not extend past the first plane. 2. The IGU of claim 1 , wherein the window controller is accessible without uninstalling or deconstructing the IGU. 3. The IGU of claim 1 , wherein the electrochromic lite comprises the notch. 4. The IGU of claim 1 , wherein the inboard lite comprises the notch. 5. The IGU of claim 1 , wherein the additional lite comprises the notch. 6. The IGU of claim 1 , further comprising a removable cover positioned to cover the notch. 7. The IGU of claim 6 , wherein the removable cover rotates open to provide access to the window controller through the notch. 8. The IGU of claim 6 , wherein the removable cover slides open to provide access to the window controller through the notch. 9. The IGU of claim 6 , wherein the removable cover pops open to provide access to the window controller through the notch. 10. The IGU of claim 1 , wherein one of the electrochromic lite and the additional lite has a rectangular perimeter, and the other of the electrochromic lite and the additional lite has a non-rectangular perimeter. 11. The IGU of claim 1 , wherein the sealing separator has a shape that is non-rectangular, as projected onto the first plane. 12. The IGU of claim 1 , wherein the window controller is positioned entirely between the first plane and the second plane. 13. The IGU of claim 1 , further comprising a dock that secures the window controller onto the electrochromic lite or the additional lite, wherein the window controller is removably connected to the dock. 14. The IGU of claim 1 , installed in a frame, an inner perimeter of the frame defining a viewable area of the IGU, wherein the window controller and the notch are positioned at least partially within the viewable area. 15. The IGU of claim 14 , wherein the window controller is removably mounted to the IGU. 16. The IGU of claim 14 , wherein the window controller is removably mounted to the frame. 17. The IGU of claim 1 , further comprising a mechanism for receiving wireless power and/or generating power such that the IGU does not require external wires for providing power to the electrochromic lite. 18. The IGU of claim 1 , wherein the window controller is capable of communicating with a second controller through wireless communication. 19. The IGU of claim 18 , wherein the window controller is configured to operate in a self-meshing network. 20. The IGU of claim 19 , wherein the window controller is configured to sense one or more nearby IGUs and receive data from the nearby IGUs to thereby generate a map of all IGUs on the self-meshing network. 21. The IGU of claim 19 , further comprising a wireless power transmitter for delivering power from the IGU to a nearby IGU on the self-meshing network. 22. The IGU of claim 21 , further comprising a wireless power receiver for receiving power from one or more nearby IGUs on the self-meshing network.
