Described are fluid pumping and fluid handling systems, which may be suitable for use in medical devices, such as artificial or extracorporeal blood pumping systems. The systems can include a dual housing configuration for pneumatic actuation comprising a main housing containing a pump cassette comprising a pneumatically actuated pump and pneumatically actuated valves. The pump can include a pump actuation chamber and pump pneumatic port, and the valves can each include a valve actuation chamber and valve pneumatic port. Connecting tubes can be used to fluidly connect the pump actuation ports and valve actuation ports to a tube-support housing having a first side receiving one end of each connecting tube and a second side providing a pneumatic interface arranged to connect to an array of pneumatic receptacles on a base unit of the system to facilitate easy, compact and accurate pneumatic interconnection between the pump cassette and the base unit.

We claim: 1. A dual housing system for pneumatic actuation comprising: a disposable pump cassette comprising a plurality of pneumatically actuated pumps and/or pneumatically actuated valves, each of said pumps having a pump actuation chamber and pump actuation port, and each of said valves having a valve actuation chamber and valve actuation port; a main housing containing a manifold interface with receptacle ports for receiving actuation ports of a manifold associated with the disposable pump cassette, wherein the receptacle ports of the manifold interface are placed in fluid communication with the pump actuation chambers of the disposable pump cassette upon receiving the actuation ports of the manifold; a plurality of connecting tubes, each said connecting tube having a first end fluidically connected to the manifold interface; a tube-support housing having a first side receiving a second end of each connecting tube and providing a fluidic connection to a pneumatic interface on a second side of the tube-support housing, the pneumatic interface positioned and arranged to fluidically connect to a complementary arrangement of pneumatic receptacles on a base unit, each said pneumatic receptacle configured to actuate a corresponding one of the pumps or valves. 2. The dual housing system of claim 1 , wherein the pump cassette comprises two or more pneumatically actuated pumps and two pneumatically actuated valves for each of said two or more pneumatically actuated pumps. 3. The dual housing system of claim 1 , wherein the pump cassette comprises a first pneumatically actuated pump and a second pneumatically actuated pump, the second pneumatically actuated pump having a pumping chamber volume that is smaller than a pumping chamber volume of the first pneumatically actuated pump. 4. The dual housing system of claim 1 , wherein the pump cassette comprises two pneumatically actuated pumps connected to a common cassette fluid inlet and a common cassette fluid outlet, each said pneumatically actuated pump connected to the common fluid inlet by a pneumatically actuated inlet valve, and each said pneumatically actuated pump connected to the common fluid outlet by a pneumatically actuated outlet valve. 5. The dual housing system of claim 1 , wherein the valve actuation ports of two or more of said plurality of pneumatically actuated valves are ganged together, so that a single pneumatic receptacle connects to the two or more pneumatically actuated valves through the pneumatic interface. 6. The dual housing system of claim 5 , wherein the single pneumatic receptacle connects to the two or more pneumatically actuated valves via a single connecting tube. 7. The dual housing system of claim 1 , wherein the pump cassette comprises an actuation plate, a middle plate and a pump chamber plate. 8. The dual housing system of claim 7 , wherein the actuation plate includes a pod pump actuation chamber housing and actuation chamber housings for the plurality of pneumatically actuated valves. 9. The dual housing system of claim 7 , wherein the middle plate comprises grooves to accept thickened rims of a pump diaphragm for each of the pneumatically actuated pumps and a valve diaphragm for each of the plurality of the pneumatically actuated valves. 10. The dual housing system of claim 7 , wherein the pump chamber plate comprises a pumping chamber housing for the pneumatically actuated pump, the pumping chamber housing in fluid connection with an inlet and an outlet of the pump cassette. 11. The dual housing system of claim 1 , further comprising a mounting receptacle within the main housing adapted to receive and securely mount the pump cassette in a single step. 12. The dual housing system of claim 11 , wherein the manifold comprising the actuation ports received by the receptacle ports of the manifold interface is configured to provide fluid communication between the receptacle ports and the pump actuation chamber of each of the pumps and between the receptacle ports and the valve actuation chamber of each of the valves of the pump cassette.
