Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A communication device receives an uplink grant from a node of a cellular network. The uplink grant indicates uplink radio resources allocated to the communication device in reoccurring time intervals. For each of these time intervals, the communication device selects between an active mode and an inactive mode. In the active mode the communication device performs an uplink transmission in the allocated uplink radio resources. In the inactive mode the communication device performs no uplink transmission in the allocated uplink radio resources.

What is claimed is: 1. A method performed by a communication device, the method comprising: receiving an uplink grant from a cellular network, the uplink grant indicating uplink radio resources allocated to the communication device in reoccurring time intervals; in response to receiving the uplink grant from the cellular network, sending a message to the cellular network, to acknowledge receipt of the uplink grant; and for each of the time intervals, selecting between: an active mode in which the communication device performs an uplink transmission in the allocated uplink radio resources, and an inactive mode in which the communication device performs no uplink transmission in the allocated uplink radio resources. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein selecting between the active mode and the inactive mode comprises selecting the active mode in response to uplink data being available for transmission. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein selecting between the active mode and the inactive mode comprises selecting the inactive mode in response to no uplink data being available for transmission. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein selecting between the active mode and the inactive mode comprises selecting the active mode in response to uplink data being available for transmission or a condition for sending a buffer status report being met, and, otherwise, selecting the inactive mode. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein sending the message comprises the communication device transmitting the message using the allocated uplink radio resources in a first one of the reoccurring time intervals. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: the communication device receiving a further uplink grant, the further uplink grant indicating further uplink radio resources allocated to the communication device in one of the time intervals; and in the one of the time intervals, the communication device performing an uplink transmission using a combination of the allocated further uplink radio resources and at least a part of the allocated uplink radio resources. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the communication device releasing the allocated uplink resources. 8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising the communication device indicating the release to the cellular network. 9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the communication device releases the allocated uplink resources responsive to expiry of a period or a number of successive selections by the communication device of the inactive mode and indicates the release to the cellular network. 10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the communication device releases the allocated uplink resources in response to receiving control information from the cellular network. 11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the release is temporary and where the method further comprising the communication device resuming use of the allocated uplink radio resources in response to expiry of a configured time period or control information from the cellular network and indicating the resumption of use to the cellular network. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the uplink grant comprises receiving a Semi-Persistent Scheduling (SPS) grant from the cellular network. 13. A method performed by a node of a cellular network, the method comprising: sending an uplink grant indicating uplink radio resources allocated to the communication device in reoccurring time intervals; resending the uplink grant, in response to not receiving an acknowledgment of the uplink grant from the communication device; and for each of the time intervals, the node selecting between: an active mode for receiving an uplink transmission from the communication device in the allocated uplink radio resources, and an inactive mode corresponding to no uplink transmission by the communication device in the allocated uplink radio resources. 14. The method of claim 13 , comprising: in the active mode, the node receiving an uplink transmission from the communication device, the uplink transmission comprising a buffer status report indicating an amount of data available for transmission by the communication device; and depending on the buffer status report, the node sending a further uplink grant to the communication device, the further uplink grant indicating further uplink radio resources allocated to the communication device in one of the time intervals. 15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising the node sending a further uplink grant to the communication device, the further uplink grant indicating further uplink radio resources allocated to the communication device in one of the time intervals, and, in the one of the time intervals, the node receiving an uplink transmission in a combination of the allocated further uplink radio resources and at least a part of the allocated uplink radio resources. 16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising detecting a release of the allocated uplink radio resources by the communication device. 17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the node detects the release on the basis of an indication from the communication device. 18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the node detects the releasing based on any of: expiry of a configured time period, an indication from the communication device, and occurrence of a threshold number of successive time intervals in which the node received no transmission from the communication device on the allocated uplink resources. 19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the releasing of the allocated uplink radio resources is temporary, and wherein, after the temporary releasing of the allocated uplink radio resources, the method further comprises the node detecting a resumption of use of the allocated uplink radio resources by the communication device, based on expiry of a configured time period or an indication from the communication device. 20. The method of claim 13 , wherein the communication device transmits the acknowledgement of the uplink grant using the allocated uplink radio resources in a first one of the reoccurring time intervals, and wherein the method further comprises the node monitoring for receipt of the acknowledgment on the allocated uplink resources in the first one of the reoccurring time intervals. 21. The method of claim 13 , wherein the node selecting between the active mode and the inactive mode comprises the node selecting the inactive mode in response to detecting no signals from the communication device in the allocated uplink radio resources. 22. The method of claim 13 , wherein the node selecting between the active mode and the inactive mode comprises, for a first one of the time intervals, selecting the active mode to receive the acknowledgment of the uplink grant from the communication device. 23. A communication device comprising: an interface configured for wirelessly connecting to a cellular network; and at least one processor, the at least one processor configured to: receive an uplink grant from the cellular network, the uplink grant indicating uplink radio resources allocated to the communication device in reoccurring time intervals; in response to receiving the uplink grant from the cellular network, send a message to the cellular network, to acknowledge receipt of the uplink grant; and for each of the time intervals, select between: an active mode in which the communication device performs an uplink transmission in the allocated uplink radio resources, and an
