A system and method for operating a game of chance. A gaming system includes one or more game displays, a user interface, at least one processor running executable instructions related to a game of chance and memory in communication with said at least one processor. The game of chance including a two-part game wherein at least one part of the two-part games includes a video reel game and includes the generation of random sub-events wherein two or more of said random sub-events are required to trigger another game part including a bonus game, a secondary game, a free game round, a “hold and spin” round, or other game event. The plurality of volatility stabilizing sub-events (VSS) required to trigger another game part serve to reduce the frequency of significant player “cold streaks” during game play.

We claim: 1. A gaming system comprising: a gaming machine including a monetary input device configured to receive a physical item associated with a monetary value, a user interface, at least one processor running executable instructions related to a game of chance, a game display and memory in communication with said at least one processor; and wherein said at least one processor runs executable instructions to: (i) generate a two-part game of chance; (ii) generate random sub-event game outcomes wherein two or more of said random sub-event game outcomes are required to trigger a bonus event; and (iii) require a predefined minimum number of plays to trigger the bonus event which equals or exceeds the number of sub-event game outcomes necessary to trigger the bonus event. 2. The gaming system of claim 1 wherein at least one part of said game of chance is a video reel game, keno game, roulette game, blackjack game, bingo game or video poker game. 3. The gaming system of claim 2 wherein the two or more of random sub-event game outcomes required to trigger a bonus event occur during said video reel game, keno game, roulette game, blackjack game, bingo game or video poker game. 4. The gaming system of claim 1 wherein steps (ii) and (iii) reduce the frequency of significant cold streaks during which said bonus event is not triggered. 5. The gaming system of claim 1 wherein said bonus event is play of a bonus game. 6. The gaming system of claim 1 wherein said bonus event is play of a secondary game. 7. The gaming system of claim 1 wherein at least one part of said two-part game of chance includes solving a jigsaw puzzle style game. 8. The gaming system of claim 1 wherein at least one part of said two-part game of chance includes solving a combination solution to a vault style game. 9. The gaming system of claim 1 wherein at least one part of said two-part game of chance includes winning a tic-tac-toe style game. 10. The gaming system of claim 1 wherein at least one part of said two-part game of chance includes winning a keno style game. 11. A gaming method comprising: utilizing a gaming machine to run a game of chance, said gaming machine including a monetary input device configured to receive a physical item associated with a monetary value, a user interface, at least one processor running executable instructions related to a game of chance, a game display and memory in communication with said at least one processor; and programming said at least one processor to: (i) generate a two-part game of chance; (ii) generate random sub-event game outcomes wherein two or more of said random sub-event game outcomes trigger a bonus event; and (iii) require a predefined minimum number of plays to trigger the bonus event which equals or exceeds the number of sub-event game outcomes necessary to trigger the bonus event. 12. The gaming method of claim 11 wherein at least one part of said game of chance is a video reel game, keno game, roulette game, blackjack game, bingo game or video poker game. 13. The gaming method of claim 12 wherein the two or more of random sub-event game outcomes required to trigger a bonus event occur during said video reel game, keno game, roulette game, blackjack game, bingo game or video poker game. 14. The gaming method of claim 11 wherein steps (ii) and (iii) reduce the frequency of significant cold streaks during which said bonus event is not triggered. 15. The gaming method of claim 11 wherein said bonus event is play of a bonus game. 16. The gaming method of claim 11 wherein said bonus event is play of a secondary game. 17. The gaming method of claim 11 wherein at least one part of said two-part game of chance includes solving a jigsaw puzzle style game. 18. The gaming method of claim 11 wherein at least one part of said two-part game of chance includes solving a combination solution to a vault style game. 19. The gaming method of claim 11 wherein at least one part of said two-part game of chance includes winning a tic-tac-toe style game. 20. The gaming method of claim 11 wherein at least one part of said two-part game of chance includes winning a keno style game. 21. A gaming system comprising: a gaming machine including a monetary input device configured to receive a physical item associated with a monetary value, a user interface, at least one processor running executable instructions related to a game of chance, a game display and memory in communication with said at least one processor; and wherein said at least one processor runs executable instructions to: (i) generate a two-part game of chance, (ii) generate random sub-event game outcomes wherein two or more of said random sub-event game outcomes are required to trigger a bonus event; (iii) require a predefined minimum number of plays to trigger the bonus event which equals or exceeds the number of sub-event game outcomes necessary to trigger the bonus event; and (iv) generate random game outcomes wherein one or more of said random game outcomes triggers the bonus event. 22. The gaming system of claim 21 wherein at least one part of said game of chance is a video reel game, keno game, roulette game, blackjack game, bingo game or video poker game. 23. The gaming system of claim 22 wherein the two or more of random sub-event game outcomes required to trigger a bonus event occur during said video reel game, keno game, roulette game, blackjack game, bingo game or video poker game. 24. The gaming system of claim 21 wherein steps (ii) and (iii) reduce the frequency of significant cold streaks during which said bonus event is not triggered. 25. The gaming system of claim 21 wherein said bonus event is play of a bonus game. 26. The gaming system of claim 21 wherein said bonus event is play of a secondary game. 27. The gaming system of claim 21 wherein at least one part of said two-part game of chance includes solving a jigsaw puzzle style game. 28. The gaming system of claim 21 wherein at least one part of said two-part game of chance includes solving a combination solution to a vault style game. 29. The gaming system of claim 21 wherein at least one part of said two-part game of chance includes winning a tic-tac-toe style game. 30. A gaming system comprising: a gaming machine including a monetary input device configured to receive a physical item associated with a monetary value, a user interface, at least one processor running executable instructions related to a game of chance, a game display and memory in communication with said at least one processor; wherein said at least one processor runs executable instructions to: (i) generate a two-part game of chance; (ii) generate random sub-event game outcomes wherein two or more of said random sub-event game outcomes are required to trigger a bonus event; (iii) require a predefined minimum number of plays to trigger the bonus event which equals or exceeds the number of sub-event game outcomes necessary to trigger the bonus event; and (iv) generate random game outcomes wherein one or more of said random game outcomes triggers the bonus event; wherein at least one part of said two-part game of chance includes a video reel game; wherein at least one part of said two-part game of chance includes a puzzle or a non-video reel game; and wherein steps (ii) and (iii) reduce the frequency of
