Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A dunnage handler for controlling the outfeed of dunnage from a dunnage machine is disclosed and can include a dunnage accumulator with first and second holding portions configured and associated with each other to define a dunnage accumulation space therebetween and for receiving and removably retaining the dunnage in the accumulation space from a dunnage machine and an articulation associating the first and second holding portions such that the holding portions are movable with respect to each other to vary the accumulation space to accommodate a varying amount of dunnage held therein, where a sensor and controller can be included to stop dunnage production when the accumulator is full.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A method of accumulating dunnage, comprising: outfeeding dunnage from an outfeed area into an accumulation space of a dunnage accumulator, in which the accumulation space has a volume; arresting the outfed dunnage in the accumulation space, thereby causing the dunnage to accumulate therein during the outfeeding; and adjusting the volume of the accumulation space by moving first and second holding portions relative to each other, the accumulation space being defined between the first and second holding portions, to accommodate and retain an increasing volume of the accumulating dunnage in the accumulation space during the outfeeding. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the holding portions is configured to articulate and thereby adjust the accumulation space volume. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein: the first holding portion includes two opposing sides having a holding portion space therebetween; and the dunnage comprises folds and is outfed into the accumulation space with the folds extending across the holding portion space, such that the dunnage is supported on the two sides. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the two sides comprise rails. 5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the dunnage is outfed from the outfeed area in a handling direction and the fold direction is generally perpendicular to the handling direction. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second holding portions are positioned above and below the accumulation space, respectively. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein one or both of the first and second holding portions has an arcuate shape facing the accumulation space, such that part of the first and second holding portions overlaps at an end of the accumulation space allowing the accumulation space to remain closed as the volume of the accumulation space varies to keep the dunnage therein from being pushed out of the accumulation space. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the holding portions are configured such that the accumulating dunnage exerts force to increase the volume of the accumulation space. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the force exerted by the accumulating dunnage causes at least one of the holding portions articulate the to a maximum volume position. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the dunnage is outfed from the outfeed area in a handling direction and the outfed dunnage comprises cross-crumples that extend across the handling direction. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the dunnage accumulator is configured to receive and accumulate dunnage produced from a continuous material. 12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising converting a stock material into the dunnage. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the dunnage is converted from stock material by crumpling the stock material. 14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the stock material is crumpled by a crumpling apparatus that comprises the outfeed area. 15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the stock material is paper. 16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the stock material comprises a plurality of sheets with connections therebetween. 17. The method of claim 12 , further comprising retrieving the dunnage from a retrieval port. 18. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sensing when the volume reaches a full level indicative of the accumulation space being full, and interrupting the outfeeding of the dunnage production upon the sensing of the full level.
