Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Systems, methods and apparatus are provided for monitoring soil properties. An example control and monitoring system for an agricultural implement having a plurality of row units includes a reflectivity sensor, a camera, a processor, and a monitoring device. The reflectivity sensor generates a reflectivity signal related to reflectivity of soil worked by the row units. The camera captures images of a seed trench opened by an opening assembly of the row units. The camera is disposed on a shank extension forward of seeds being deposited in the seed trench by the row units. The processor is configured to calculate a statistical variation in the reflectivity signal and the monitoring device is configured to display one or more of the images captured by the camera and a representation of the statistical variation.

What is claimed is: 1. A control and monitoring system for an agricultural implement having a plurality of row units, the control and monitoring system comprising: a reflectivity sensor configured to generate a reflectivity signal related to reflectivity of soil worked by at least one of said row units; a camera configured to capture images of a seed trench opened by an opening assembly of at least one of said row units, the camera being disposed on a shank extension forward of seeds being deposited in the seed trench by at least one of said row units; a processor in data communication with said reflectivity sensor and said camera, said processor configured to calculate a statistical variation in said reflectivity signal; and a monitoring device configured to display a representation of the statistical variation and one or more of the images captured by the camera. 2. The control and monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein said reflectivity sensor includes multiple sensors, which are disposed on a soil engaging component disposed within said seed trench formed by said opening assembly of at least one of the row units. 3. The control and monitoring system of claim 2 , wherein said soil engaging component is disposed rearward of seeds being deposited in said seed trench by the row unit. 4. The control and monitoring system of claim 3 , wherein said soil engaging component is a seed firmer. 5. The control and monitoring system of claim 2 , wherein said soil engaging component is said shank extension. 6. The control and monitoring system of claim 2 wherein said soil engaging component is a trailing member secured to a shank of at least one of the row units forward of seeds being deposited in the seed trench by at least one of the row units. 7. The control and monitoring system of claim 2 wherein said soil engaging component is a trailing member secured to said shank extension attached to a shank of the row unit forward of seeds being deposited in the seed trench by at least one of the row units. 8. The control and monitoring system of claim 2 , wherein said reflectivity sensors are disposed on a bottom side of said soil engaging component to measure soil reflectivity at a bottom of said seed trench. 9. The control and monitoring system of claim 2 , wherein said reflectivity sensors are disposed on a side of said soil engaging component to measure soil reflectivity on a sidewall of said seed trench. 10. The control and monitoring system of claim 2 , wherein said reflectivity sensors are disposed on a bottom side of said soil engaging component to measure soil reflectivity at a bottom of said seed trench. 11. The control and monitoring system of claim 9 , wherein said soil engaging component includes a biasing member to bias said soil engaging component toward said sidewall of said seed trench. 12. The control and monitoring system of claim 1 , further comprising a global positioning receiver in data communication with said monitoring device, wherein said monitoring device is configured to associate said generated reflectivity signal with a position reported by said global positioning receiver. 13. The control and monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the representation of the statistical variation includes a spatial reflectivity variation map, in which the statistical variation is displayed spatially. 14. The control and monitoring system of claim 13 , wherein the spatial reflectivity variation map includes areas, which defines different visual distinctions, based on the statistical variation; and wherein the visually distinctions includes color and/or pattern. 15. The control and monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the monitoring device is further configured to display a predicted agronomic result, which is based on the statistical variation. 16. The control and monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the representation of the statistical variation includes the statistical variation relative to a threshold, the threshold defining a period or a distance. 17. The control and monitoring system of claim 1 wherein, the monitoring device is further configured to display at least one of: a row identifier, a soil moisture value, and/or at least one agronomic property value based on analysis of at least one of the images.
